Memorable Logos That Tell Stories and Connect Emotionally

Designing a brand identity or a logo that is both unforgettable and expresses the story of who you are or what you do is a monumental undertaking. The challenge is to make a design which is simplistic enough to be comprehended at a glimpse and imparts enough relevant information that it can articulate who you are. But no logo can genuinely tell your story or explain your business, and going down that path usually makes for a logo design that performs neither. Although, in skilled hands, it is possible to strike a balance between both and create a brand identity that both informs and emotes and reaching that sweet spot is what every business should hope for from their brand identity designer.

ImageCo is one person, Tim Garner, I am a freelance branding specialist. For over 20 years I have been designing memorable logos and brand identity designs which tell stories and resonate with customers. But don’t take my word for it, check out my portfolio and see for yourself. I don’t assert that I am the greatest brand identity designer in the world, however, I do know what I am actually doing and my clients are inclined to agree.

A LOGO IS NOT YOUR BRAND

The expression “your logo is not your brand” is a statement that is often said with such fervor by people working in the branding industry, that a person has to question why so many people in branding agencies despise logos as much as they appear to. It is definitely true that your logo is not your business’s brand, but what does that mean for a brand that has no logo? One thing is quite certain, it ensures that a brand with no logo will be faceless and forgettable.

Without a visual identity, a business’s brand is really nothing more than a fading memory because consumers would have nothing to anchor their experiences too.

Some people compare a logo to a smile or a handshake which is somewhat accurate, however it’s actually much more than that. A logo is a brand’s anchor and it also serves as the cornerstone of an organization’s brand. A logo acts as an anchor because the entire brand experience is secured to it. It is also a brand’s cornerstone, since a cornerstone is the first stone laid when building the foundation of the structure above it, and once laid it will serve as the guiding reference point for every building block that comes after it. A logo functions in the same way, it is a foundational building block that supports the business it represents, and it also serves as a defining reference point that guides a brand as it expands.

ImageCo is a brand identity business and our mission is to assist our customers lay that cornerstone and drop that anchor. We help organizations look established, more polished, and more professional. This helps ensure that our clients will always stand out, and are not only worthy of a seat at the table, but look like they should be seated at the head of that table.

Yuba City LOGO DESIGN

For over 20 years ImageCo has been helping start ups and entrepreneurs cultivate memorable brands. We have done logo design work for builders, universities, diamond miners, party planners, coffee shops, retail stores, and practically every other kind of business you can envision. What makes ImageCo different compared to traditional designers is that our background is rooted in the electrical sign industry so we approach every brand identity project as if it will be used as an electrical sign. Because of our sign first method our designs can, and have been employed in everything from garment labels to neon signs. Our sign first method guarantees that our logo designs are equally effective whether they are used in television commercials or website apps, they are consistently identifiable, comprehended, and remembered irrespective of scale or purpose.

American Made ★ Design

Something which seriously sets ImageCo apart from many of the design firms that you might have stumbled upon in search results, companies like Thumbtack, Design Hill, Upwork, or Crowdspring is that absolutely every design project we are hired to perform, we do in-house. Regardless of the kind of project we accept, business logo, business website, trade show exhibition, or retail sign, we do not, and never will contract out our customer’s projects to agencies located outside the US. When you contact us at 1-855-IMAGECO the individual that answers the phone is ImageCo’s owner and designer, not a middleman that marks up the cost of your project and dictates the conditions of how we conduct business.

ASPECTS OF AN EFFECTIVE LOGO DESIGN

Virtually every new Yuba City business realizes that they probably need a logo, but few new business owners entirely realize the key role their organization’s logo can play in their becoming successful, or why one business logo works more effectively than another. A logo design has an instant and long-term effect on the success of a business, select the correct one and it will make the door swing and phone ring, go with the wrong one and it can be a barrier and a hindrance for the life span of a business.

The logos included in the ImageCo portfolio help Yuba City companies succeed, they are effective in any given scenario and the main reason they are so effective is because they all have these five features in common.

  1. Simplicity: simple logos don’t require contemplation, they can be comprehended in just a glance.
  2. Scalability: from clothing labels to retail signs a scalable logo will remain legible and just as emotive at virtually any size.
  3. Versatility: logos which function on any device, in print, on product packaging, on a mobile phone, or on a ball cap.
  4. Suitability: they are appropriate, they feel right, and they are suitable for the item or company they brand.
  5. Relevance: a business logo needs to be lasting and will feel equally relevant today, tomorrow, and 20 years from now.

understanding branding

Brand – It’s a verb and a noun, it’s an identifying mark and also the process of marking something so that it could be identified, its foundation originates from the mark branded onto livestock. Nowadays a brand signifies practically anything with an intention, regardless of whether it be revenue or political parties, a brand is an inherent aspect of defining the value of a specific thing in the public’s mind.

Branding – Is sort of like advertising and marketing’s attractive sister, they are all from the same family, the difference being that marketing and advertising are about making a promise and branding’s goal is to deliver on that promise. Branding is also a strategic popularity competition directed at a specific audience, it’s goal is to develop a mental image that the audience will likely identify with.

Brand Image – An image planted and nurtured through advertising and marketing and also identity design. When someone says the names Ferrari or Corvette what we think of is their brand image, it’s a picture that exists in our minds. That image isn’t an image of an automobile with 4 wheels that can transport us from point A to point B, the image we have (or at least I have) is of freedom, elegance, of something dangerous and unique . That is brand image and brand image is what makes individuals purchase those products. Brand image is why people get most things, from Pepsi to Coke Chevy or Ford, Democrats or Republicans … all driven by brand images that we can identify with.

Branding Firms – If you look back at the history of the majority of branding companies you’ll discover that they are quite often re-branded advertising companies. When someone states they are in marketing the majority of people will likely have an idea about the type of work they do anything that can be seen, touched or heard are part of a brand identity.

Brand Identity Designer
– A brand identity designer is a visual designer that specializes in a type of visual design that helps form the perception of a company, a product or a company. Brand identity designers create logo designs, sign designs, packaging, and also collateral material such as cards, stationery, and sales brochures. Some visual designers also design websites and also software interfaces. The crucial role of a brand identity designer is to create the visual cues and an emotional tone with the goal of influencing activities, results and perceptions.

Featured signs/logos

Retro logo style of a bicycle created for a Yuba City coffee cafe and a coffee roaster.

Ferry Street Coffee Company | Logo Design | Retail Branding

This fledgling coffee roaster and bistro were opening up in an older part of the city and really wanted to project a retro tone without coming across as uninteresting or low energy. I fulfilled the two jobs via developing a sign concept that includes a man on a high wheel bicycle (aka The Penny Farthing), it is old-fashioned, higher energy, and is a enduring business image.

clinical logo style with a microscope slide as well as germs designed for Yuba City medical clinic.

Mid-Valley Pathology | Logo Design

Pathology is the scientific discipline which analyzes the triggers and outcomes of diseases, especially the branch of healthcare that works with the laboratory evaluation of samples of body cellular material for diagnostic or forensic purposes.

The Mid-Valley Pathology custom logo design I came up with is the sole instance I recall where I was able to integrate a bacteria-laden microscope slide into a business logo design.

Usually I try not to be overly literal with a design and to a point, this design approaches the company it represents fairly literally, but it does it in a fashion that integrates the slide as part of the name so it doesn’t serve so much as an explanation of what Mid-Valley Pathology does so much as acts as an enhancement to the brand that makes it more appealing, more interest grabbing and even more unforgettable.

logo design with a leaping eco-friendly frog created for a household fun center in Yuba City.

Cool Springz | Logo Design | Retail Branding

The Cool Springz Trampoline Park was a very cool project to work on, most likely because a trampoline park is all about fun. It’s also a project that is way out of the usual of the kinds of projects which come my way, I’ve done dozens of logo designs for surgeons, dental practices, and legal professionals but Cool Springz is without question the one and only trampoline park which I have ever gotten the privilege to work on.

Given that the full name of the company features the word springz in its name the clear choice would have been to integrate a couple of springs into the design but Cool Springz is a fun place to go and spring doesn’t actually reflect an environment of fun does it. My thought process on this logo design project went from springs (boring) to what jumps around, kangaroos … but kangaroos are cute and this place is cool, in the end I landed on a green tree frog and a dimensional treatment of the name itself to give the logo a better lively high energy mood.

In the end, Cool Springz ended up loving my concept and named the frog Jax and integrated him in to everything they utilized for advertising and marketing. I also believe this is the only time that a logo I came up with was made into a mascot when they had an employee costume fashioned to look just like my frog design.

digital photography logo including a group of birds, a mountain, a path, a stream, and also a tree - developed for Yuba City travel professional photographer.

Travel Don’t Wander | Logo Design | Website Design

Travel Don’t Wander was a custom logo design project I took on for a travel photographer, which is a rather specialized field of photography and I think it is a niche profession because travel photographers don’t shoot places or things but instead project emotional journeys through the photos they capture. The thought behind this logo concept was to utilize negative space to communicate more than what was visible upon first glance, which I think is quintessential of the majority of professional photographers in that they oftentimes share whole stories through their photography.

It’s said that a picture is worth a 1000 words but I think that some photographs convey significantly more than that because their photos often have an emotional fullness that can’t be communicated with just words. I tried to do something the same to this logo by making use of the positive space in the design to suggest one thing and then at the same time using the negative space to expand upon what was conveyed through the first impression. I think, in looking back, that my goal was to both brand this photographer with a memorable  Yuba City logo but also to reveal the depth in her art and in the way that she sees the world through the lens of her camera.

Yuba City logo layout with a seagull used for the letter A. Designed for a cordless retail company.

Coastal Wireless | Logo Design

The lion’s share of logo design projects that I take on I truly enjoy and the Coastal Wireless design was one that I really felt good about, but the customer didn’t quite share my enthusiasm for it. I felt really good about the concept of using the seagull shape as a stroke in the letter A but the client, while he loved the concept, didn’t care for my choice of birds. This guy really hated seagulls, which he referred to as the “rats of the sky”, thankfully the rest of his family didn’t share his aversion for this particular type of sea bird.

When I turn a concept over to a customer I urge all of them to talk about it with colleagues and family as well as with individuals that they don’t even know so as to get honest point of views on the benefit of a design. Fortunately, he talked about it with his family members and they adored the concept and were able to persuade him and get him to sign off on it, but not before he worked me over to insert every other seabird he could think of … ultimately I was able to talk him out of his preference of a pelican and he went with the original concept.

Logo designs are a strange animal in the design world given that the people that tend to hire a professional to design their logo design recognize how vital a logo is for their business so they are way more invested in the final result. Every logo project has it’s allotment of difficulties, however the most significant obstacle is finding that sweet spot in a design that operates really well at the job it’s needed to do in branding a business and also giving the client the identity they see for themselves.

a red panda logo layout with bamboo in the background, style for Yuba City publication author

Red Panda Publishers | Logo Design

The book spine is a narrow slice of real estate to work with, yet it is the most essential part of a published book given that it is usually the primary thing a person sees in the book store. Regarding a publishing company, it’s the optimal opportunity that they will ever have to promote their brand and get their logo design in front of the people that shop for actual books.

This 3 color design is vivid, colorful and eye-catching and it leaves plenty of room for the title and the author’s name.

Air LA logo made for an airline in Los Angeles, the logo design has two letter A's with benches customized to imply they are wings.

Air LA | Logo Design

Airlines arrive and go but it seems that in many occurrences one of the aspects consumers often tend to remember the most are their logos. The Air LA logo design was done for a modest startup commuter/shuttle airline company situated in LA and although I’m not certain it actually “took off” their logo design didn’t slow them. The bookend A’s in their name lent itself well to conferring a feeling of airline flight and it was certainly a victory.

Yuba City logo layout utilized for advertising and marketing and also a label layout for Vintage Situation features an antiquated typeface design.

Vintage Case | Logo Design

Vintage case specialized in new cases for music instruments, that looked to be older cases. For this brand design I sought to come up with a logo that provided a fluid retro feel to it and could easily be utilized for every thing from a web site to an insignia on brand new cases that appeared like they were from a different point in time.

Logo produced for an orthodontist in Yuba City, layout consist of an arc with lines converging with it to suggest steel dental braces.

Kujak Orthodontics | Logo Design | Sign Design

Dentistry business logos can be one of the most challenging logo projects due to the fact that it seems that every dental professional includes a smile, a tooth, a smiling tooth, or a toothy smile in their design. Dental logo designs are one of the very most cliche ridden fields when it comes to small business marketing, if dining establishments approached their advertising in the exact same way dental professionals do every one of their logos would definitely be a picture explaining anything they served, McDonalds would likely have a picture of a potato and a cow.

I understand the thinking behind incorporating an illustration of something mouth related to a dentist’s company logo nevertheless it has to be done subtly or it will just look like every other clipart dentists logo that litter the branding landscape of the dentistry industry.

I actually love doing dental care logo designs simply because it challenges me to come up with a design that implies the field of dentistry or a particular field of dental treatment like orthodontics without resorting to the clichéd approach that so many dentists settle on.

Kujak Orthodontics provided such an opportunity and subsequently I created a design that does not have a solitary smile or a tooth in it, but even though they aren’t obvious, they are still suggested in the design. When I turned this particular design over to the customer the only smile that was apparent was the smile on Dr. Kujak’s face.

William McNally logo design created for a household not-for-profit, the logo design features 4 characters staggered in height to represent a family with in the layout.

William McNally | Logo Design | Branding

The William McNally Family Foundation asked ImageCo to help them come up with a custom logo design that would be representative of the devotion that William McNally had for the people in his city. Many logos with the name “family” in them tend to contain portrayals of a happy family, a cliche heavy technique to any logo design is to be far too literal with regards to what the name says or the industry it represents. I’ve discovered that the best designs are the ones that are understated and never hit the viewer on the head with what the company or institution wishes to communicate.

The McNally Foundation’s name offered a unique opportunity to do a logo which communicated that they were about families without being openly tacky about it. The goal of a logo design is to be remembered and recognized and if the designer attempts to use the logo design to explain specifically how people should think or feel they don’t understand the purpose of a logo. If you have to ponder a logo design to understand what it means, it has been in vain, a logo needs to be immediately comprehended and a logo that describes itself will never have the likelihood to be understood.

Logo layout produced for a Yuba City hair layout studio featuring a manuscript font a hummingbird as well as an indicated orchid for the letter O.

Wild Orchid Studio | Logo Design Project

Wild Orchid Studios desired a business logo which carried a feeling of serenity and class for their new hair studio. I came up with a concept that did not go the obvious path of crafting simply a stylized orchid but alternatively delivered a company logo that suggested an orchid in the pattern of a swirl incorporated in to the letter O in the title and by putting attention on the logo design along with the silhouette of a hummingbird hovering over the logo itself. The obvious path in creating a business logo is usually the incorrect route and in this case, the design ended up not being about the flower but alternately put the main focus on the emotion that they wanted to project to their patrons.

Arabian equine logo design created for a steed ranch that focuses on breeding Arabian show horses.

Dazzo Arabians | Logo Design

ImageCo crafted an original creative logo concept tailored to manifest the unique physical traits of the Arabian type of equines. With a distinctive head shape and high tail carriage, the Arabian is one of the highly immediately recognizable horse lineages in the whole world.

Las Cafe, A Yuba City Coffee shop logo layout a little dining establishment, layout contains a changed script font which floats over a group of elaborate lines as well as dots.

Las Cafe | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

Las Coffee shop logo design a little dining establishment, design includes a customized manuscript typeface which hovers over a team of luxuriant lines as well as dots.

Logo design for a software developer the style attributes and famous Yuba City component of a bridge to the left of the name.

Smart Kernels | Logo Design

A kernel is the principal component of an operating system (OS). Typically, the kernel is responsible for memory administration, process and task management, and hard drive managing. The kernel unites the system hardware to the application software. In other words a kernel is {essentially|quite literally a bridge that operates as a bridge between the software program and computer hardware.

The logo I came up with for Smart Kernels was based on an actual bridge that is located a couple of miles from the business offices of Smart kernels. It’s a logo design that doesn’t attempt to spell out anything to anyone with regards to what business they are in or how it relates to their specific location. Nevertheless it represented something to the owner of the company and in many cases the substance behind a logo design is just as important as how it brands the enterprise it represents.

Develop logo style developed for a Yuba Cityindoor designer, design function a collection of red circles that converge and change the letter O in the middle of the logo design.

Evolv Interior Design | Logo Design | Branding

Evolv Design is a Yuba City interior design company and this logo design is representational of the work that an interior designer does in. An interior designer is an individual who arranges, explores, coordinates, and oversees such ventures. Interior design is a diverse occupation that includes conceptual development, space planning, location evaluations, programming, study, communicating with the stakeholders of a project, construction management, and execution of the design.

logo style done for Advanced Leadership Solutions in Yuba City, the personalities for letter V and also A in middle of the word progressed have been modified to link directly into the words below.

Advanced Leadership Solutions | Logo Design | Website Design

This particular Yuba City logo design project was undertaken for a leadership specialist that assists business leaders to develop into more successful at managing people, expectations, and productivity.

A Yuba City business logo design featuring an angler in the center of the name casting a fly towards the viewer.

On The Fly | Logo Design | Retail Branding

With brands such as Cabelas and Bass Pros raking in more than 7 billion a year offering supplies and equipment to outdoor sporting lovers the owners of On the Fly understood the market place was primed for an outdoor sporting retailer that operates as a consignment company. Whether or not you are into boating, fishing or rock climbing, or even hunting, On the Fly presents a destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts with all types of passions, a place to sell their secondhand products to other sports enthusiasts.

I tailored their Yuba City logo design with an image which garners the interest of vehicles and sends an image that arouses the passion of the outdoors. With traffic that averages 45 miles per hour I knew it would take more than the average logo/sign to get commuters to take notice, hence the graphic of a fly fisherman in his natural and calm habitat.

Logo style MQ farms, this Yuba City company logo layout has actually a field included right into the letter Q.

MQ Farms | Logo Design | Branding

The MQ farms logo concept wasn’t really created for an Yuba City regional farm it was in reality developed for a products broker, and this particular company logo was one of many that fell underneath the MQ umbrella … MQ commodities was one, MQ trading was another. The goal was actually to produce a brand mark that projects esteem, financial success, and opulence.

Yuba City Logo design for a nonprofit, Transforming Point Solutions - the logo design function for ostensibly facing arrowhead and also the arrowheads indicate that it is a ruby shape.

Turning Point Foundation | Logo Design

The Turning Point Foundation was entirely open to what type of logo design they desired, this can be a good thing or a bad thing. Good in that it gives a designer the opportunity to discover any concept that comes to mind, bad in that it’s difficult to hit a bullseye without recognizing where exactly the target is. Luckily, in this particular case, I struck a bullseye with the very first go.

Logo design developed for using an indication for the restaurant (Brewgrrs), it is an ornate manuscript typeface that is reminiscent of a famous Yuba City sports group logo.

Brewgrrs Restaurant | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

I’ve designed loads of restaurant logos and establishment signs for restaurants, diners, sports bars, night clubs, dining establishments, and eateries all over the US, from cupcake pastry shops to pizza parlors and oyster bars, out of all of them I think Brewgrrs was my absolute favorite. Brewgrrs was a great undertaking in which I worked closely with the proprietor to develop a business logo that worked really well and did a fantastic job to brand them, it worked on everything on everything from coasters, and tap handles all the way to the illuminated sign which hung over their doors, and was highly visible and very easy to read from over a block away.
