Boulder, Colorado Logo Design

Virtually every new Boulder business person knows they are in need of a logo, but few entrepreneurs fully grasp the vital role their company logo will perform in their becoming successful, or why one logo design performs more effectively than another. A logo has an immediate and long-term influence on the prosperity of a company, select the correct one and it will make the door swing and cash register ring, select the incorrect one and it will be a barrier and a hindrance for the longevity of a company.

The logos featured in the ImageCo portfolio help Boulder, Colorado businesses prosper, they are effective in any given scenario and the main reason they are so effective is that they all have these 5 traits in common.

  1. Simplicity: simple logos don’t require deliberation, they can be understood in merely a glimpse.
  2. Scalability: from labels to posters a scalable business logo will remain legible and just as emotive at every size.
  3. Versatility: logos that work on any type of device, in print, on packaging, on a mobile phone, or on a ball cap.
  4. Suitability: they are appropriate, they are unique, and they are suitable for the organization they stand for.
  5. Relevance: a company logo needs to be timeless and will feel as relevant today, tomorrow, and twenty years from now.
Retro logo layout of a bicycle developed for a Boulder, Colorado coffee cafe and also a coffee roaster.

Ferry Street Coffee Company | Logo Design | Retail Branding

This budding coffee roaster and bistro were actually opening up in an old part of town and wanted to visualize an old-fashioned atmosphere without coming across as uninteresting or low energy. I fulfilled the two jobs by means of creating a business logo design that features a man on a high wheel bicycle (aka The Penny Farthing), it is antiquated, high energy, and is a classic business image.

medical logo layout with a microscope slide and also bacteria made for Boulder, Colorado medical clinic.

Mid-Valley Pathology | Logo Design

Pathology is the scientific discipline that investigates the causes and outcomes of diseases, especially the branch of medicine which deals with the clinical evaluation of specimens of body tissue for diagnostic or forensic objectives.

The Mid-Valley Pathology custom logo design I came up with is the only instance I call to mind in which I was able to integrate a bacteria-laden microscope slide within a business logo design.

Normally I try not to be overly literal with a design and to a point, this specific design approaches the company it serves very literally, but it does it in a fashion that incorporates the slide as part of the name so it doesn’t serve so much as an explanation of what Mid-Valley Pathology does so much as acts as an enhancement to the brand that makes it more intriguing, more interest grabbing and more meaningful.

logo style with a leaping eco-friendly frog made for a household fun facility in Boulder, Colorado.

Cool Springz | Logo Design | Retail Branding

The Cool Springz Trampoline Park was a really cool project to work on, probably because a trampoline park is all about fun. It’s additionally a project that is way out of the norm of the types of projects which come my way, I’ve done dozens of logo designs for surgeons, dental practices, and lawyers but Cool Springz is without question the one and only trampoline park that I have ever gotten the opportunity to work on.

Given that the full name of the business has the word springz in its name the clear choice would have been to feature a handful of springs into the concept but Cool Springz is a fun location to go and spring doesn’t actually resonate an environment of fun does it. My thought process on this logo project went from springs (boring) to what jumps around, kangaroos … but kangaroos are cute and this place is cool, eventually I landed on a green tree frog and a dimensional treatment of the name itself to give the logo a much more enthusiastic high energy atmosphere.

In the end, Cool Springz ended up loving my concept and named the frog Jax and incorporated him in to everything they used for advertising and marketing. I also think this is the only time that a logo I did was made into a mascot when they had an employee costume fashioned to look exactly like my frog design.

digital photography logo design including a flock of birds, a mountain, a trail, a stream, and also a tree - developed for Boulder, Colorado traveling photographer.

Travel Don’t Wander | Logo Design | Website Design

Travel Don’t Wander was a custom logo design job I took on for a travel photographer, which is a fairly specialized field of photography and I think it is a niche area due to the fact that travel photographers don’t capture locations or things but instead convey emotional experiences by means of the pictures they record. The idea behind this logo design was to use negative space to reveal more than what was visible upon first view, which I think is quintessential of almost all good photographers in that they frequently convey whole stories using their photography.

It’s said that a picture is worth a 1000 words but I think that some photographs convey much more than that because their photos often have an emotional fullness which can’t be conveyed with mere words. I attempted to do something the same to this logo by using the positive space in the design to say one thing and then at the same time using the negative space to expand upon what was communicated through the first impression. I think, in hindsight, that my goal was to both brand this photographer with a memorable  Boulder logo but also to show the depth of her art and in the way that she views the world through the lens of her camera.

Boulder logo layout with a seagull utilized for the letter A. Designed for a cordless retail business.

Coastal Wireless | Logo Design

The majority of business logo design jobs that I take on I genuinely savor and the Coastal Wireless design was one that I really felt good about, however the client didn’t quite share my enthusiasm for it. I felt really good about the concept of using the seagull shape as a stroke in the letter A however my customer, while he liked the concept, really did not care for my choice of birds. This guy truly hated seagulls, which he referred to as the “rats of the sky”, luckily the rest of his family members didn’t share his aversion for this specific kind of sea bird.

When I turn a design over to a customer I encourage all of them to discuss it with friends and family as well as with individuals that they don’t actually know so as to get honest viewpoints on the benefit of a design concept. Fortunately, he discussed it with his whole family and they loved the concept and were able to persuade him and get him to sign off on it, but not before he worked me over to incorporate every other seabird he could think of … ultimately I was able to talk him out of his choice of a pelican and he proceeded with the original design.

Custom logo designs are a weird animal in the design world given that the people that are inclined to hire an expert to design their logo comprehend how important a logo is for their company so they are way more invested in the outcome. Every logo project has it’s share of challenges, but the greatest challenge is finding that sweet spot in a design that operates really well at the job it’s needed to do in branding a company and also giving the client the image they see for themselves.

a red panda logo layout with bamboo behind-the-scenes, layout for Boulder, Colorado publication publisher

Red Panda Publishers | Logo Design

The book spine is a cramped slice of real estate to work with, but it is the most essential part of a published book given that it is in most cases the very first thing a person sees in the book shop. With regard to a publisher, it’s the best opportunity they will ever get to spotlight their label and get their logo design in front of the individuals that buy actual books.

This 3 color design is vivid, colorful and eye-catching and it leaves plenty of space for the title and the author’s name.

Air LA logo design created for an airline in Los Angeles, the logo has two letter A's with benches changed to suggest they are wings.

Air LA | Logo Design

Airlines come and depart yet it looks like that in many instances one of the things individuals tend to recall the most are their logos. The Air LA logo design was done for a modest start-up commuter/shuttle airline company located in LA and although I’m not certain it actually “took off” their logo didn’t slow them. The bookend A’s in their brand lent itself well to conferring a sense of airline flight and it was undoubtedly a victory.

Boulder logo style utilized for advertising as well as a tag design for Vintage Situation features an old font style style.

Vintage Case | Logo Design

Vintage case focused in new cases for music instruments, that appeared to be antique cases. For this brand concept I strove to come up with a logo that provided a fluid retro feel to it and could easily be used for every thing from a website to a label on brand new cases that looked like they were from another generation.

Logo design produced for an orthodontist in Boulder, Colorado, design consist of an arc with lines converging through it to imply steel braces.

Kujak Orthodontics | Logo Design | Sign Design

Dental care logos can easily be one of the most challenging and difficult logo projects considering that it appears that every single dentist involves a smile, a tooth, a smiling tooth, or a toothy smile in their design. Dental logos are one of the very most cliche ridden professions when it comes to small business advertising, if restaurants approached their advertising in the same way dental practitioners do every one of their company logos would be a picture trying to explain anything they served, McDonalds would probably contain an image of a potato and a cow.

I recognize the thinking behind adding a likeness of something mouth related to a dentist’s logo but it has to be performed subtly or it will just look like every other clipart dentists logo that litter the branding landscape of the dental care industry.

I really love doing dental logos simply because it challenges me to come up with a design that implies dentistry or a specific area of the field of dentistry like orthodontics without resorting to the clichéd course of action that so many dentists settle on.

Kujak Orthodontics offered such an opportunity and inevitably I created a design that does not have a solitary smile or a tooth in it, but even though they aren’t obvious, they are still suggested in the design. When I turned this design over to the client the only smile that was evident was the smile on Dr. Kujak’s face.

William McNally logo design created for a family not-for-profit, the logo includes 4 personalities staggered in elevation to stand for a family with in the layout.

William McNally | Logo Design | Branding

The William McNally Family Foundation asked ImageCo to help them come up with a logo design that would be illustrative of the devotion that William McNally had for the residents in his community. Most logos with the name “family” in them tend to contain images of a happy family, a cliche heavy technique to any logo design is to be far too literal with regards to what the name says or the industry it represents. I’ve found that the best designs are the ones that are downplayed and don’t hit the viewer on the head with what the company or organization wants to convey.

The McNally Foundation’s name provided a unique opportunity to do a logo design which conveyed that they were about families without being openly tacky about it. The goal of a logo is to be remembered and recognized and if the designer attempts to use the logo to summarize exactly how individuals should think or feel they don’t understand the objective of a logo. If people have to think about a logo design to understand what it means, it has fallen short, a logo needs to be immediately understood and a logo design that illustrates itself will never have the chance to be comprehended.

Logo design produced for a hair design workshop featuring a manuscript font a hummingbird and a suggested orchid for the letter O.

Wild Orchid Studio | Logo Design Project

Wild Orchid Studios needed a logo which communicated an atmosphere of serenity and class for their new hair salon. I came up with a concept which did not go the obvious path of creating just a stylized orchid but instead designed a logo design which suggested a flower in the pattern of a swirl integrated in to the letter O in the name and by putting emphasis on the logo design with the figure of a hummingbird hovering above the image itself. The obvious path in creating a business logo is more often than not the wrong direction and in this case, the design ended up not being about the flower but instead laid the attention on the emotion that they wanted to transmit to their clients.

Logo design for a software program programmer the design features and renowned element of a bridge to the left of the name.

Smart Kernels | Logo Design

A kernel is the central part of an operating system (OS). Generally, the kernel is responsible for memory administration, process and task control, and disk operations. The kernel connects the system hardware to the application software. In other words a kernel is {essentially|quite literally a bridge that performs as a connection between the software program and computer hardware.

The business logo I came up with for Smart Kernels was based on an actual bridge that is situated a number of miles from the offices of Smart kernels. It’s a logo design that doesn’t attempt to explain anything to anyone about what business they are in or how it relates to their specific location. Nevertheless it symbolized something to the owner of the company and in quite a few cases the symbolism behind a logo is equally as important as how it brands the organization it stands for.

A logo design including an angler in the middle of the name casting a fly towards the visitor.

On The Fly | Logo Design | Retail Branding

With brands like Cabelas and Bass Pros raking in more than 7 billion a year retailing goods and equipment to outdoor sporting lovers the owners of On the Fly understood the market place was primed for an outdoor sporting merchant that operates as a consignment company. Whether you are into boating, sportfishing or mountain climbing, or even hunting, On the Fly provides a venue for outdoor sports enthusiasts with all sorts of interests, a spot to market their secondhand items to other sports enthusiasts. I designed their Boulder business logo dsign along with an image that garners the interest of traffic and sends an image that invokes the enthusiasm of the outdoors. With visitor traffic that averages 45 mph I realized it would take more than the average logo/sign to get commuters to take notice, hence the graphic of a fly fisherman in his natural and calm habitat.
Logo layout MQ farms, this logo design has actually an area incorporated right into the letter Q.

MQ Farms | Logo Design | Branding

Turning Point Foundation | Logo Design

The Turning Point Foundation was totally open to what kind of logo design they wanted, that can be a good thing or a bad thing. Good in that it provides a designer the flexibility to investigate any concept that comes to mind, bad in that it’s difficult to hit a bullseye in the absence of understanding where the target is. Luckily, in this particular case, I hit a bullseye with the very first go.

Logo developed for making use of a sign for the dining establishment (Brewgrrs), it is an elaborate manuscript typeface that is evocative a popular sports group logo.

Brewgrrs Restaurant | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

I have crafted dozens of restaurant custom logo designs and establishment signs for restaurants, diners, sports bars, night clubs, dining establishments, and eateries all over the US, from cupcake pastry shops to pizza parlors and oyster bars, out of all of them I believe Brewgrrs was my absolute favorite. Brewgrrs was a cool undertaking in which I worked directly with the owner to create a logo design which worked very well and did a fantastic job to brand them, it worked on everything on everything from coasters, and tap handles all the way to the illuminated signage which hung above their doors, and was highly visible and very legible from over a block away.
