Kalamazoo, Michigan Logo Design

Every new Kalamazoo venture understands that they require a logo, yet few entrepreneurs fully understand the crucial role their business logo will play in their becoming successful, or exactly why one logo functions better than another. A logo has an instant and long-term influence on the growth of a company, choose the right one and it can make the door swing and cash register ring, choose the wrong one and it will be a barrier and an impediment for the life span of an organization.

The logos featured in the ImageCo portfolio help Kalamazoo, Michigan companies succeed, they are effective in any given scenario and the reason why they are so effective is that they all have these 5 traits in common.

  1. Simplicity: simple logos don’t require deliberation, they can be realized in just a look.
  2. Scalability: from business cards to signboards a scalable business logo will stay legible and equally emotive at every scale.
  3. Versatility: logos that work on any sort of device, in print, on packaging, on a mobile phone, or on a ball-cap.
  4. Suitability: they are appropriate, they are unique, and they are suitable for the business they represent.
  5. Relevance: a logo design needs to be enduring and will feel relevant today, tomorrow, and thirty years from today.

Logo PORTFOLIO Volume 1

Retro logo design of a bicycle produced for a Kalamazoo, Michigan coffee cafe and a coffee roaster.

Ferry Street Coffee Company | Logo Design | Retail Branding

This startup coffee roaster and coffee bar were opening in an old part of the community and really wanted to visualize a vintage vibe without coming across as boring or low energy. I achieved the two jobs by developing a logo design that features a man on a high wheel bicycle (aka The Penny Farthing), it is old-fashioned, higher energy, and is a timeless business image.

medical logo design with a microscopic lense slide as well as bacteria made for Kalamazoo, Michigan clinical center.

Mid-Valley Pathology | Logo Design

Pathology is the science that analyzes the triggers and outcomes of diseases, especially the branch of medicine that works with the laboratory examination of samplings of body cellular material for diagnostic or forensic intents.

The Mid-Valley Pathology brand I came up with is the sole instance I recall where I was able to integrate a bacteria-laden microscope slide into a business logo design.

Typically I attempt not to be extremely literal with a design and to a degree, this design approaches the company it represents quite literally, but it does it in a way that incorporates the slide as part of the name so it doesn’t serve so much as an illustration of what Mid-Valley Pathology does so much as acts as an enhancer to the name that makes it more interesting, more attention grabbing and more memorable.

logo layout with a leaping environment-friendly frog developed for a family fun facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Cool Springs | Logo Design | Retail Branding

The Cool Springz Trampoline Park was a very fun project to work on, probably because a trampoline park is all about fun. It’s also a project that is way out of the norm of the kinds of projects that come my way, I’ve done dozens of logo designs for medical professionals, dental experts, and legal professionals but Cool Springz is without question the one and only trampoline park which I have ever had the opportunity to work on.

Given that the name of the company has the word springz in its name the apparent choice would have been to feature a couple springs into the design but Cool Springz is a fun destination to go and spring doesn’t really resonate an atmosphere of fun does it. My thought process on this project went from springs (boring) to what jumps around, kangaroos … but kangaroos are cute and this place is cool, ultimately I landed on a green tree frog and a dimensional treatment of the title itself to give the logo a better dynamic high energy feeling.

In the end, Cool Springz ended up loving my concept and named the frog Jax and included him in to everything they utilized for marketing and advertising. I also believe this is the only time that a logo I designed was transformed into a mascot when they had an employee costume fashioned to look exactly like my frog design.

photography logo design featuring a group of birds, a mountain, a path, a stream, and a tree - designed for Kalamazoo, Michigan traveling photographer.

Travel Don’t Wander | Logo Design | Website Design

Travel Don’t Wander was a custom logo design project I took on for a travel photographer, which is a fairly niche field of photography and I think it is a niche speciality due to the fact that travel photographers don’t capture places or things but instead convey emotional experiences through the photos they capture. The idea behind this logo concept was to use negative space to communicate more than what was visible upon first glance, which I think is representative of almost all good photographers in that they oftentimes share whole stories through their photography.

It’s said that a picture is worth a thousand words but I think that some photographs convey much more than that because their photos often have an emotional resonance that can’t be communicated with just words. I attempted to do something the same to this logo design by employing the positive space in the design to say one thing and then at the same time using the negative space to expand upon what was communicated through the first impression. I think, in hindsight, that my goal was to both brand this photographer with a memorable  Kalamazoo logo but also to illustrate the depth of her work and in the way that she views the world through the lens of her camera.

Kalamazoo logo style with a seagull made use of for the letter A. Designed for a wireless retail business.

Coastal Wireless | Logo Design

The majority of custom logo design projects that I take on I honestly enjoy and the Coastal Wireless design was one that I certainly felt good about, however the customer didn’t quite share my excitement for it. I felt really good about the idea of using the seagull form as a stroke in the letter A however my client, even though he liked the concept, didn’t care for my choice of birds. This particular man genuinely despised seagulls, which he referred to as the “rats of the sky”, fortunately the rest of his friends and family didn’t share his contempt for this particular breed of sea bird.

When I turn a design over to a client I urge all of them to share it with friends and colleagues and family as well as with people that they don’t even know so as to get unbiased opinions on the worthiness of a concept. Fortunately, he shared it with his family and they really liked the concept and were able to persuade him and get him to sign off on it, but not before he worked me over to incorporate every other seabird he could think of … in the end I was able to talk him out of his alternative of a pelican and he went with the original concept.

Business logos are a weird animal in the design world because the people that have a tendency to hire a professional to create their logo design recognize how essential a logo is for their organization so they are way more invested in the final result. Every logo design project possesses it’s allotment of obstacles, however the greatest obstacle is identifying that sweet spot in a design that works really well at the job it’s needed to do in branding a company and also giving the customer the image they see for themselves.

a red panda logo layout with bamboo behind-the-scenes, layout for Kalamazoo, Michigan publication author

Red Panda Publishers | Logo Design

The book spine is a cramped slice of real estate to work with, however it is the most essential part of a printed book due to the fact that it is ordinarily the primary thing a person views in the bookstore. With respect to a publishing company, it’s the optimal opportunity they will ever get to promote their product and get their logo design in front of the people that shop for actual books.

This three color design is vibrant, colorful and eye-catching and it leaves plenty of area for the title and the author’s name.

Air LA logo developed for an airline in Los Angeles, the logo has 2 letter A's with benches customized to indicate they are wings.

Air LA | Logo Design

Airlines come and depart yet it looks like that in many instances 1 of the traits people often tend to recollect the most are their logos. The Air LA logo design was done for a smaller new venture commuter/shuttle air service situated in LA and although I’m not certain it really “took off” their logo design didn’t slow them. The bookend A’s in their title lent itself well to imparting a feeling of air travel and it was undoubtedly a winner.

Kalamazoo logo style utilized for advertising and marketing as well as a label style for Vintage Case features an old font style.

Vintage Case | Logo Design

Vintage case specialized in brand-new cases for musical instruments, which looked to be antique cases. For this logo design I sought to come up with a logo that offered a fluid retro feel to it and could be utilized for anything from a web site to an insignia on brand new cases that looked like they were from a different generation.

Logo design produced for an orthodontist in Kalamazoo, Michigan, layout include an arc with lines converging through it to suggest metal braces.

Kujak Orthodontics | Logo Design | Sign Design

Dental logos can be one of the most challenging and difficult logo design projects considering that it seems that every single dentist involves a smile, a tooth, a smiling tooth, or a toothy smile in their design. Dentistry logo designs are one of the very most cliche ridden fields when it comes to business advertising, if restaurants approached their advertising in the same way dental practices do every one of their company logos would definitely be a picture explaining anything they served, McDonalds would likely have a picture of a potato and a cow.

I understand the thinking behind incorporating an image of something mouth associated to a dentist’s logo but it has to be done subtly or it will just look like every other clipart dentists logo that litter the branding landscape of the dental profession.

I really love doing dentistry logo designs because it challenges me to come up with a design that implies the field of dentistry or a particular area of dentistry like orthodontics without resorting to the stereotypical solution that so many dentists settle on.

Kujak Orthodontics provided such an opportunity and ultimately I created a concept that does not have a solitary smile or a tooth in it, but even though they aren’t overt, they are still implied in the concept. When I turned this particular design over to the client the only smile that was obvious was the smile on Dr. Kujak’s face.

William McNally logo design designed for a family not-for-profit, the logo includes 4 characters surprised in height to stand for a family with in the style.

William McNally | Logo Design | Branding

The William McNally Family Foundation asked ImageCo to help them come up with a brand identity design that would be representative of the devotion that William McNally had for the people in his community. Many logos with the name “family” in them tend to contain depictions of a happy family, a cliche heavy approach to any logo design is to be very literal pertaining to what the name says or the industry it represents. I’ve found that the best concepts are the ones that are understated and never hit the viewer on the head with what the company or institution wishes to project.

The McNally Foundation’s name offered a unique opportunity to do a custom logo design that communicated that they were about families without being openly tacky about it. The intention of a logo is to be remembered and recognized and if the designer tries to use the logo design to describe exactly how people ought to think or feel they don’t understand the mission of a logo. If viewers have to consider a logo design to understand what it means, it has been in vain, a logo needs to be immediately understood and a logo that illustrates itself will never have the opportunity to be understood.

Logo layout created for a hair style studio including a manuscript font a hummingbird as well as a suggested orchid for the letter O.

Wild Orchid Studio | Logo Design Project

Wild Orchid Studios wanted a logo that related a spirit of serenity and connection for their new hair salon. I came up with a concept that didn’t go the obvious direction of designing merely a stylized orchid but instead crafted a logo design which suggested an orchid in the formation of a swirl featured into the letter O in the title and by putting attention on the logo design with the silhouette of a hummingbird hovering over the logo itself. The obvious path in creating a business logo is in most cases the incorrect path and in this case, the design ended up not being about the orchid but alternately placed the focus on the emotion that they really wanted to transmit to their patrons.

Logo design for a software developer the design functions as well as legendary component of a bridge to the left of the name.

Smart Kernels | Logo Design

A kernel is the key part of an operating system (OS). Generally, the kernel is responsible for memory administration, process and task control, and drive management. The kernel links the system hardware to the application software. In other words a kernel is {essentially|quite literally a bridge that functions as a connection between the software and computer hardware.

The logo I came up with for Smart Kernels was based on an actual bridge that is situated a number of miles from the offices of Smart kernels. It’s a logo design that doesn’t attempt to spell out anything to anyone regarding to what business they are in or how it relates to their specific location. But it represented something to the owner of the business and in many cases the substance supporting a logo is just as important as how it serves the business it represents.

A logo style including a fisherman in the middle of the name casting a fly towards the viewer.

On The Fly | Logo Design | Retail Branding

With brand names like Cabelas and Bass Pros raking in over 7 billion a year retailing goods and equipment to outdoor sporting enthusiasts the owners of On the Fly understood the market place was ready for an outdoor sporting merchant that operates as a consignment company. Whether you are into boating, sportfishing or mountain climbing, or even hunting, On the Fly presents a venue for outdoor sports enthusiasts with all kinds of interests, a location to sell off their previously owned items to other sports enthusiasts. I tailored their Kalamazoo logo design dsign utilizing an image that garners the attention of traffic and sends an image that arouses the passion of the outdoors. With visitor traffic that averages 45 miles per hour I realized it would take more than the typical logo/sign to get travelers to take notice, hence the picture of a fly fisherman in his natural and tranquil habitat.
Logo style MQ farms, this logo style has a field included right into the letter Q.

MQ Farms | Logo Design | Branding

The MQ farms business logo design wasn’t actually produced for an Kalamazoo, Michigan area farm it was actually devised for a commodities broker, and this particular logo was one of multiple that fell under the MQ umbrella … MQ commodities was one, MQ trading was another. The end goal was actually to produce an identity that projected esteem, effectiveness, and wealth.

Kalamazoo Logo design for a not-for-profit, Transforming Factor Solutions - the logo layout feature for outwardly dealing with arrow and also the arrowheads imply that it is a diamond shape.

Turning Point Foundation | Logo Design

The Turning Point Foundation was entirely open to what type of logo design they wanted, that can be a good thing or a bad thing. Good in that it provides a designer the flexibility to investigate any concept that comes to mind, bad in that it’s challenging to hit a bullseye in the absence of recognizing where the target is. Luckily, in this particular case, I struck a bullseye with the first shot.

Logo design created for using an indicator for the restaurant (Brewgrrs), it is a luxuriant manuscript font that is reminiscent of a renowned sports team logo design.

Brewgrrs Restaurant | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

I’ve created dozens of restaurant custom logo designs and establishment signs for restaurants, diners, sports bars, night clubs, dining establishments|eateries} all over the US, from cupcake pastry shops to pizza parlors and oyster bars, out of all of them I think Brewgrrs was my absolute favorite. Brewgrrs was a great undertaking where I worked closely with the business owner to design a logo design that worked extremely well and did a great job to brand them, it worked on everything on everything from coasters, and tap handles all the way to the illuminated sign which hung over their doors, and was highly visible and very easy to read from over a block away.
