Hawthorne Logo Design

Each and every new Hawthorne venture realizes that they require a logo, yet few new business owners thoroughly understand the essential role their logo will make in their financial success, or precisely why one logo design functions better than another. A logo design has an immediate and sustaining effect on the growth of a company, go with the correct one and it can make the door swing and phone ring, choose the wrong one and it will be a barrier and a hindrance for the life span of a company. The logos featured in the ImageCo portfolio help Hawthorne businesses succeed, they are effective in any given scenario and the reason they are so effective is that they all have these 5 things in common.
  1. Simplicity: simple logo designs do not require deliberation, they can be understood in merely a look.
  2. Scalability: from business cards to signboards a scalable logo design will stay legible and just as emotive at every size.
  3. Versatility: logos that function on any type of device, in print, on product packaging, on a mobile phone, or on a ball cap.
  4. Suitability: they are appropriate, they are unique, and they are suitable for the company they represent.
  5. Relevance: a logo should be timeless and will feel relevant today, tomorrow, and twenty years from now.

Retro logo style of a bicycle created for a Hawthorne coffee cafe as well as a coffee roaster.

Ferry Street Coffee Company | Logo Design | Retail Branding

This start-up coffee roaster and cafe were actually opening up in an old section of the city and hoped to visualize a retro tone without coming across as uninteresting or low energy. I achieved both of these tasks by means of designing a trademark design that uses a man on a high wheel bicycle (aka The Penny Farthing), it is antiquated, high energy, and is a enduring business image.

medical logo design with a microscope slide as well as germs created for Hawthorne clinical center.

Mid-Valley Pathology | Logo Design

Pathology is the science which researches the causes and outcomes of diseases, mainly the branch of medicine that works with the clinical examination of specimens of human body cellular material for diagnostic or forensic purposes.

The Mid-Valley Pathology logo I came up with is really the only instance I remember in which I was able to incorporate a bacteria-laden microscope slide right into a logo design.

Usually I attempt not to be overly literal with a design and to a point, this design approaches the company it represents fairly literally, however it does it in a way that integrates the slide as part of the name so it doesn’t serve so much as an explanation of what Mid-Valley Pathology does so much as acts as an enhancement to the name that helps make it more captivating, more focus grabbing and more unforgettable.

logo layout with a jumping green frog created for a family enjoyable facility in Hawthorne.

Cool Springz | Logo Design | Retail Branding

The Cool Springz Trampoline Park was a really cool project to work on, probably because a trampoline park is all about fun. It’s also a project that is way out of the norm of the sorts of jobs which come my way, I’ve done dozens of logo designs for medical professionals, dental offices, and attorneys but Cool Springz is without question the one and only trampoline park that I have ever gotten the privilege to work on.

Given that the title of the business features the word springz in its name the clear choice would have been to feature a few springs into the design but Cool Springz is a fun destination to go and spring doesn’t really resonate an environment of fun does it. My thought process on this project went from springs (boring) to what jumps around, kangaroos … but kangaroos are cute and this place is cool, eventually I landed on a green tree frog and a dimensional treatment of the name itself to provide the logo a much more lively high energy feeling.

In the end, Cool Springz ended up loving my design and named the frog Jax and included him in to everything they utilized for advertising and marketing. I also believe this is the only time that a logo I came up with was made into a mascot when they had an employee costume fashioned to look exactly like my frog design.

photography logo design including a flock of birds, a hill, a trail, a stream, and a tree - designed for Hawthorne travel photographer.

Travel Don’t Wander | Logo Design | Website Design

Travel Don’t Wander was a custom logo design project I took on for a travel photographer, which is a fairly niche field of photography and I believe it is a niche field because travel photographers tend not to shoot places or things but instead project emotional experiences by means of the images they record. The idea behind this logo concept was to utilize negative space to project more than what was visible upon first view, which I think is representative of most professional photographers in that they often convey whole stories through their photography.

It’s said that a picture is worth a 1000 words but I think that some photographs convey a lot more than that because their photos often have an emotional fullness which can’t be communicated with just words. I made an effort to do something much the same to this logo design by employing the positive space in the design to voice one thing and then at the same time using the negative space to expand upon what was conveyed through the first impression. I think, in hindsight, that my objective was to both brand this photographer with a memorable  Hawthorne logo but also to show the depth to her work and in the way that she views the world through the lens of her camera.

Hawthorne logo layout with a seagull utilized for the letter A. Designed for a cordless retail service.

Coastal Wireless | Logo Design

The majority of logo design projects that I take on I genuinely enjoy and the Coastal Wireless project was one that I certainly felt good about, however the client didn’t quite share my excitement for it. I felt really good about the idea of using the seagull shape as a stroke in the letter A however the client, while he liked the concept, didn’t care for my choice of birds. This particular guy seriously loathed seagulls, which he referred to as the “rats of the sky”, luckily the rest of his family didn’t share his scorn for this specific variety of sea bird.

When I turn a design over to a customer I encourage them to share it with friends and family as well as with folks that they don’t actually know so as to get objective viewpoints on the worthiness of a design concept. Fortunately, he talked about it with his family and they adored the design and were able to reason with him and get him to sign off on it, but not before he worked me over to include every other seabird he could think of … ultimately I was able to talk him out of his alternative of a pelican and he went with the original design.

Logos are a strange animal in the design world given that the people that have a tendency to hire an expert to design their logo understand how vital a logo design is for their company so they are way more vested in the outcome. Every logo design job possesses it’s allotment of hurdles, but the largest challenge is finding that sweet spot in a design that functions really well at the task it’s required to do in branding a business and also providing the client the identity they see for themselves.

a red panda logo design with bamboo behind-the-scenes, style for Hawthorne publication publisher

Red Panda Publishers | Logo Design

The book spine is a thin slice of real estate to work with, nevertheless it is the most important part of a published book since it is usually the primary thing a person views in the book store. For a publisher, it’s the absolute best opportunity they will likely ever get to spotlight their label and get their logo design in front of the individuals that purchase actual books.

This 3 color design is vivid, picturesque and eye-catching and it leaves plenty of space for the title and the author’s name.

Air LA logo design developed for an airline in Los Angeles, the logo has 2 letter A's with benches modified to imply they are wings.

Air LA | Logo Design

Airlines come and depart but it seems like that in many instances one of the aspects consumers usually tend to recall the most are their logos. The Air LA logo design was done for a modest fledgling commuter/shuttle airline company located in LA and although I’m not sure it really “took off” their logo didn’t slow them. The bookend A’s in their title lent itself well to imparting a sense of flight and it was surely a winner.

Hawthorne logo style made use of for advertising and marketing and also a tag design for Vintage Case features an antiquated typeface design.

Vintage Case | Logo Design

Vintage case specialized in brand new cases for music instruments, which seemed to be older cases. For this business logo concept I sought to come up with a logo that possessed a fluid vintage feel to it and could be utilized for anything from a web site to a label on brand new cases that appeared like they were from a different generation.

Logo developed for an orthodontist in Hawthorne, layout include an arc with lines converging through it to indicate steel braces.

Kujak Orthodontics | Logo Design | Sign Design

Dental business logos can be one of the most difficult logo projects because it seems that every single dentist includes a smile, a tooth, a smiling tooth, or a toothy smile in their design. Dentistry business logos are one of the very most cliche ridden careers when it comes to business advertising, if restaurants approached their branding in the very same way dental practitioners do every one of their logo designs would be a picture explaining anything they served, McDonalds would most likely include a picture of a potato and a cow.

I recognize the thinking behind incorporating an illustration of something mouth associated to a dentist’s logo nevertheless it has to be done subtly or it will just look like every other clipart dental professionals logo that litter the branding landscape of the dentistry industry.

I actually love doing dental care logo designs simply because it challenges me to come up with a design that implies the field of dentistry or a particular field of dentistry like orthodontics without resorting to the stereotypical approach that so many dentists settle on.

Kujak Orthodontics delivered such an opportunity and eventually I created a concept that does not have a solitary smile or a tooth in it, but even though they aren’t overt, they are still implied in the design. When I turned this particular design over to the client the only smile that was apparent was really the smile on Dr. Kujak’s face.

William McNally logo design made for a household not-for-profit, the logo design includes 4 personalities startled in elevation to stand for a family with in the design.

William McNally | Logo Design | Branding

The William McNally Family Foundation reached out to ImageCo to help them come up with a custom logo design that would be depictive of the devotion that William McNally had for the people residing in his community. Most logos with the name “family” in them tend to contain portrayals of a happy family, a cliche heavy approach to any logo design is to be very literal with regards to what the name says or the industry it represents. I’ve found that the best designs are the ones that are downplayed and don’t hit the viewer on the head with what the company or institution wishes to relate.

The McNally Foundation’s name presented a unique opportunity to do a logo which communicated that they were about families without being overtly corny about it. The aim of a logo design is to be remembered and recognized and if the designer makes an effort to use the logo to explain exactly how people should think or feel they don’t understand the goal of a logo. If viewers have to consider a logo to understand what it means, it has been in vain, a logo needs to be immediately understood and a logo design that describes itself will never have the chance to be understood.

Logo design created for a hair style workshop featuring a script font a hummingbird as well as an indicated orchid for the letter O.

Wild Orchid Studio | Logo Design Project

Wild Orchid Studios desired a business logo which communicated a sense of simplicity and elegance for their new hair studio. I created a concept that did not go the obvious direction of crafting simply a stylized orchid but rather delivered a business logo which implied an orchid in the pattern of a swirl integrated into the letter O in the title and by placing emphasis on the concept using the silhouette of a hummingbird floating above the logo design itself. The obvious path in designing a logo is more often than not the incorrect course and in this case, the design ended up not being about the orchid but instead laid the attention on the feeling that they wanted to transmit to their clients.

Arabian horse logo style created for an equine ranch that concentrates on breeding Arabian show steeds.

Dazzo Arabians | Logo Design

Las Cafe logo style a little dining establishment, layout includes a changed script font which hovers over a team of elaborate lines as well as dots.

Logo style for a software developer the layout functions and famous element of a bridge to the left of the name.

Smart Kernels | Logo Design

A kernel is the central part of an operating system (OS). Traditionally, the kernel is responsible for memory administration, process and task management, and hard drive operations. The kernel unites the computer hardware to the application software. In other words a kernel is {essentially|quite literally a bridge that performs as a bridge between the software and hardware.

The logo I came up with for Smart Kernels was based on an actual bridge that is located a couple of miles from the offices of Smart kernels. It’s a logo design that doesn’t attempt to spell out anything to anyone about what business they are in or how it relates to their specific location. Nevertheless it meant something to the business owner of the company and in quite a few cases the significance behind a company logo is just as important as how it serves the business it stands for.

Advance logo style created for a Hawthorne indoor designer, style feature a collection of red circles that intersect as well as replace the letter O in the middle of the logo design.

A logo style including a fisherman in the middle of the name casting a fly towards the viewer.

On The Fly | Logo Design | Retail Branding

With brand names such as Cabelas and Bass Pros raking in over 7 billion a year offering goods and equipment to outdoor sporting enthusiasts the founders of On the Fly recognized the market was ready for an outdoor sporting store that functions as a consignment business. Whether you are into boating, fishing or mountain climbing, or even hunting, On the Fly provides a venue for outdoor sports enthusiasts with all types of interests, a location to sell off their secondhand products to other sports enthusiasts. I tailored their Hawthorne logo dsign using an illustration that garners the attention of vehicles and sends an image that wakens the passion of the outdoors. With visitor traffic that averages 45 miles per hour I realized it would take more than the average logo/sign to get commuters to take notice, hence the picture of a fly fisherman in his natural and relaxed habitat.
Logo layout MQ ranches, this logo design has actually an area incorporated into the letter Q.

MQ Farms | Logo Design | Branding

The MQ farms company logo design wasn’t really designed for an Hawthorne area farm it was really created for a products broker, and this particular company logo was one of several that fell underneath the MQ umbrella … MQ commodities was one, MQ trading was another. The objective was actually to make a graphic that projected assurance, effectiveness, and luxury.
Logo made for making use of an indicator for the restaurant (Brewgrrs), it is an elaborate script typeface that is similar to a renowned sports group logo design.

Brewgrrs Restaurant | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

I’ve created dozens of restaurant logo designs and business signs for restaurants, diners, sports bars, night clubs, dining establishments|eateries} all over the United States, from cupcake bakeshops to pizza parlors and oyster bars, out of all of them I believe Brewgrrs was my favorite. Brewgrrs was a cool undertaking in which I worked closely with the business owner to create a business logo that worked really well and did a fantastic job to brand them, it worked on everything on everything from coasters, and tap handles all the way to the neon signage that hung over their doors, and was highly visible and very easy to read from over a block away.
