Madison Logo Design

Virtually every new Madison company knows they are in need of a logo, however few new business owners entirely grasp the essential role their logo will play in their success, or exactly why one logo performs better than another. A logo has an immediate and long-term impact on the growth of a company, pick the right one and it will make the door swing and phone ring, choose the wrong one and it will be an obstacle and an impediment for the longevity of an organization. The logos presented in the ImageCo portfolio help Madison companies prosper, they are effective in any given situation and the reason they are so effective is because they all have these five features in common.
  1. Simplicity: simple logos do not demand consideration, they can be understood in merely a look.
  2. Scalability: from business cards to signboards a scalable logo will remain legible and just as emotive at virtually any dimension.
  3. Versatility: logos that function on any sort of device, in print, on packaging, on a mobile phone, or on a ball cap.
  4. Suitability: they are appropriate, they are exclusive, and they are suitable for the business they stand for.
  5. Relevance: a business logo must be timeless and will feel relevant today, tomorrow, and twenty five years from now.

Retro logo design of a bicycle produced for a Madison coffee cafe and a coffee roaster.

Ferry Street Coffee Company | Logo Design | Retail Branding

This fledgling coffee roaster and coffee bar were launching in an old section of town and really wanted to project an old-fashioned tone without coming across as stodgy or low energy. I fulfilled the two tasks by developing a company logo concept that uses a man on a high wheel bicycle (aka The Penny Farthing), it is old-fashioned, higher energy, and is a ageless business image.

clinical logo layout with a microscopic lense slide and germs developed for Madison medical center.

Mid-Valley Pathology | Logo Design

Pathology is the science that investigates the triggers and consequences of diseases, especially the branch of healthcare which works with the clinical examination of samples of human body cellular material for diagnostic or forensic objectives.

The Mid-Valley Pathology brand I came up with is the only instance I remember in which I was in a position to integrate a bacteria-laden microscope slide into a logo design.

Normally I try not to be excessively literal with a concept and to a degree, this specific design approaches the company it represents rather literally, but it does it in a way that integrates the slide as part of the name so it doesn’t serve so much as a description of what Mid-Valley Pathology does so much as acts as an enhancement to the name that makes it more appealing, more interest grabbing and much more memorable.

logo layout with a jumping eco-friendly frog developed for a family members fun center in Madison.

Cool Springz | Logo Design | Retail Branding

The Cool Springz Trampoline Park was a very cool project to work on, most likely because a trampoline park is all about fun. It’s also a project that is way out of the usual of the kinds of projects which come my way, I’ve produced dozens of logo designs for surgeons, dentists, and attorneys but Cool Springz is without question the only trampoline park that I have actually ever had the opportunity to work on.

Given that the name of the business has the word springz in its name the obvious choice would have been to incorporate a couple springs into the design but Cool Springz is a fun place to go and spring doesn’t really resonate an environment of fun does it. My thought process on this logo project went from springs (boring) to what jumps around, kangaroos … but kangaroos are cute and this place is cool, ultimately I landed on a green tree frog and a dimensional treatment of the title itself to give the logo a more dynamic high energy mood.

In the end, Cool Springz ended up loving my brainchild and named the frog Jax and incorporated him in to everything they utilized for advertising and marketing. I also believe this is the only time that a logo I came up with was transformed into a mascot when they had a staff member costume fabricated to look exactly like my frog design.

digital photography logo design including a flock of birds, a mountain, a trail, a stream, and a tree - developed for Madison travel professional photographer.

Travel Don’t Wander | Logo Design | Website Design

Travel Don’t Wander was a custom logo design job I took on for a travel photographer, which is a fairly specialized field of photography and I think it is a niche sector because travel photographers don’t shoot places or things but instead convey emotional experiences through the images they record. The idea behind this logo composition was to use negative space to reveal more than what was visible upon initial glance, which I think is representative of the majority of good photographers in that they often tell whole stories through their photography.

It’s said that a picture is worth a thousand words but I think that some photographs convey much more than that because their photos often have an emotional resonance which can’t be communicated with mere words. I attempted to do something similar to this logo design by employing the positive space in the design to say one thing and then at the same time using the negative space to expand upon what was communicated through the first impression. I think, in looking back, that my objective was to both brand this photographer with a memorable  Madison logo but also to show the depth to her work and in the way that she views the world through the lens of her camera.

Madison logo style with a seagull used for the letter A. Designed for a cordless retail company.

Coastal Wireless | Logo Design

The majority of business logo design projects that I take on I really savor and the Coastal Wireless assignment was one that I certainly felt good about, but the customer didn’t quite share my excitement for it. I felt really good about the idea of using the seagull form as a stroke in the character A however my client, even though he loved the concept, didn’t care for my choice of birds. This guy seriously hated seagulls, which he referred to as the “rats of the sky”, luckily the rest of his family members didn’t share his contempt for this specific variety of sea bird.

When I turn a design over to a client I encourage them to discuss it with friends and family members as well as with folks that they don’t even know so as to get honest viewpoints on the worthiness of a design. Fortunately, he talked about it with his family members and they adored the design and were able to persuade him and get him to sign off on it, but not before he worked me over to insert every other seabird he could think of … in the end I was able to talk him out of his choice of a pelican and he went with the original design.

Logo designs are a weird animal in the design world because the people that are inclined to hire an expert to design their logo design realize how crucial a logo is for their company so they are way more invested in the end result. Every logo design job possesses it’s share of difficulties, however the most significant challenge is finding that sweet spot in a design that functions really well at the task it’s required to do in branding a company and also giving the customer the identity they see for themselves.

a red panda logo design with bamboo in the background, layout for Madison publication author

Red Panda Publishers | Logo Design

The book spine is a thin segment of real estate to work with, however it is the most necessary part of a published book considering that it is ordinarily the first thing a person views in the book store. With respect to a publisher, it’s the absolute best opportunity they will likely ever have to publicize their label and get their logo design in front of the men and women that buy actual books.

This 3 color design is vibrant, colorful and eye-catching and it gives plenty of space for the title and the author’s name.

Air LA logo design made for an airline company in Los Angeles, the logo has two letter A's with benches changed to suggest they are wings.

Air LA | Logo Design

Airlines arrive and go nevertheless it seems like that in many cases 1 of the traits consumers often tend to recall the most are their logos. The Air LA logo design was done for a young startup commuter/shuttle airline situated in LA and while I’m not sure it actually “took off” their business logo didn’t slow them. The bookend A’s in their name lent itself well to affording a spirit of air travel and it was definitely a winner.

Madison logo design used for marketing and also a tag layout for Vintage Instance includes an old-fashioned font layout.

Vintage Case | Logo Design

Vintage case specialized in brand-new cases for music instruments, which seemed to be much older cases. For this business logo design I attempted to come up with a logo that provided a fluid old style feel to it and could be used for everything from a web page to a label on brand new cases that appeared like they were from another generation.

Logo created for an orthodontist in Madison, style consist of an arc with lines intersecting through it to suggest steel braces.

Kujak Orthodontics | Logo Design | Sign Design

Dental care logos can easily be one of the most challenging and difficult logo design projects because it appears that almost every dentist involves a smile, a tooth, a smiling tooth, or a toothy smile in their design. Dental logos are one of the most cliche ridden professions when it comes to small business advertising, if dining establishments approached their branding in the same way dental practitioners do every one of their company logos would definitely be a picture explaining something they served, McDonalds would likely have a picture of a potato and a cow.

I recognize the thinking behind including an image of something mouth related to a dentist’s logo but it has to be performed subtly or it will just look like every other clipart dental professionals logo that litter the branding landscape of the dental industry.

I actually love doing dental care business logos simply because it challenges me to come up with a design that implies dentistry or a particular area of dental treatment like orthodontics without resorting to the stereotypical approach that so many dentists settle on.

Kujak Orthodontics offered such an opportunity and inevitably I created a concept that doesn’t have a single smile or a tooth in it, but even though they aren’t overt, they are still suggested in the concept. When I turned this particular concept over to the customer the only smile that was evident was really the smile on Dr. Kujak’s face.

William McNally logo created for a household not-for-profit, the logo design includes 4 characters startled in height to stand for a family unit with in the layout.

William McNally | Logo Design | Branding

The William McNally Family Foundation reached out to ImageCo to help them come up with a brand identity design that would be representative of the devotion that William McNally had for the people in his community. The majority of logos with the name “family” in them tend to contain images of a happy family, a cliche heavy strategy to any logo design is to be very literal pertaining to what the name says or the industry it represents. I’ve found that the best designs are the ones that are downplayed and never hit the viewer on the head with what the company or institution hopes to convey.

The McNally Foundation’s name offered a unique opportunity to do a logo which conveyed that they were about families without being openly corny about it. The objective of a logo design is to be remembered and recognized and if the designer tries to use the logo to illustrate precisely how people should think or feel they don’t understand the mission of a logo. If you have to consider a logo to understand what it means, it has fallen short, a logo needs to be immediately understood and a logo that illustrates itself won’t have the opportunity to be comprehended.

Logo style produced for a hair layout workshop including a script font a hummingbird and an implied orchid for the letter O.

Wild Orchid Studio | Logo Design Project

Wild Orchid Studios required a company logo which carried a feeling of serenity and elegance for their new hair studio. I created a concept that didn’t go the obvious direction of making simply a stylized orchid but instead crafted a business logo which suggested a flower in the formation of a swirl featured into the letter O in the name and by placing attention on the concept along with the silhouette of a hummingbird hovering over the logo design itself. The obvious path in creating a logo is generally the incorrect route and in this case, the design ended up not being about the flower but alternately put the focus on the feeling that they wanted to forecast to their patrons.

Logo design for a software application programmer the layout functions as well as renowned component of a bridge to the left of the name.

Smart Kernels | Logo Design

A kernel is the key part of an operating system (OS). Generally, the kernel is responsible for memory administration, process and task management, and hard drive operations. The kernel connects the computer hardware to the application software. In other words a kernel is {essentially|quite literally a bridge that functions as a connection between the software and computer hardware.

The logo I came up with for Smart Kernels was based on an actual bridge that is situated a few miles from the offices of Smart kernels. It’s a logo design that doesn’t attempt to point out anything to anyone regarding what business they are in or how it relates to their specific location. However it symbolized something to the business owner of the business and in quite a few cases the meaning behind a business logo is equally as important as how it serves the business it represents.

A logo layout featuring a fisherman in the middle of the name casting a fly towards the viewer.

On The Fly | Logo Design | Retail Branding

With companies like Cabelas and Bass Pros raking in over 7 billion a year retailing supplies and equipment to outdoor sporting fans the owners of On the Fly realized the market place was ready for an outdoor sporting store that operates as a consignment company. Whether you are into boating, angling or rock climbing, or even hunting, On the Fly presents a location for outdoor sports enthusiasts with all kinds of passions, a location to sell their pre-owned products to other sports enthusiasts. I created their Madison logo dsign along with an illustration that garners the attention of vehicles and projects an image that wakens the enthusiasm of the outdoors. With traffic that averages forty five miles per hour I realized it would take more than the average logo/sign to get travelers to take notice, hence the image of a fly fisherman in his natural and relaxed habitat.

MQ Farms | Logo Design | Branding

The MQ farms company logo idea wasn’t actually designed for an Madison regional farm it was actually developed for a commodities broker, and this brand was one of multiple which fell beneath the MQ umbrella … MQ commodities was one, MQ trading was another. The objective was really to design a brand mark that projects self-assurance, effectiveness, and affluence.
Logo made for using an indication for the restaurant (Brewgrrs), it is an ornate manuscript font style that is evocative a famous sporting activities team logo.

Brewgrrs Restaurant | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

I’ve designed dozens of restaurant custom logo designs and business signs for restaurants, diners, sports bars, night clubs, dining establishments|eateries} all over the US, from cupcake bakeries to pizza parlors and oyster bars, out of all of them I believe Brewgrrs was my absolute favorite. Brewgrrs was a neat undertaking where I worked closely with the business owner to design a business logo which worked extremely well and did a great job to brand them, it functioned on everything on everything from coasters, and tap handles all the way to the lighted sign that hung over their doors, and was highly visible and very easy to read from over a block away.
