Durham, North Carolina Logo Design

Every new Durham venture realizes that they require a logo, but few new business owners thoroughly comprehend the pivotal role their business logo will play in their financial success, or why one business logo works more effectively than another. A company logo has an immediate and lasting effect on the success of a company, go with the correct one and it will make the door swing and phone ring, choose the incorrect one and it will be an obstacle and a hindrance for the life span of an organization.

The logos included in the ImageCo portfolio help Durham, North Carolina companies prosper, they are effective in any given circumstance and the reason why they are so effective is that they all have these 5 things in common.

  1. Simplicity: simple logo designs do not demand deliberation, they can be grasped in just a glance.
  2. Scalability: from business cards to billboards a scalable logo will continue to be legible and just as emotive at any size.
  3. Versatility: logos that function on any type of device, in print, on packaging, on a mobile phone, or on a ball-cap.
  4. Suitability: they are appropriate, they are unique, and they are suitable for the company they stand for.
  5. Relevance: a company logo needs to be lasting and will feel relevant today, tomorrow, and twenty five years from today.

Logo PORTFOLIO Volume 1

Retro logo design of a bike produced for a Durham, North Carolina coffee cafe and a coffee roaster.

Ferry Street Coffee Company | Logo Design | Retail Branding

This start-up coffee roaster and coffee shop were opening up in an older section of the city and wanted to cast a retro feel without appearing as monotonous or low energy. I fulfilled both of these tasks by means of developing a trademark design that uses a man on a high wheel bicycle (aka The Penny Farthing), it is old-fashioned, higher energy, and is a timeless business image.

medical logo layout with a microscopic lense slide and also bacteria made for Durham, North Carolina medical facility.

Mid-Valley Pathology | Logo Design

Pathology is the scientific discipline that researches the triggers and consequences of diseases, especially the field of medicine which works with the clinical examination of samplings of human body cellular material for diagnostic or forensic intents.

The Mid-Valley Pathology custom logo design I came up with is the only instance I call to mind where I was in a position to incorporate a bacteria-laden microscope slide into a logo design.

Usually I try not to be extremely literal with a design and to a point, this design approaches the company it represents quite literally, but it does it in a fashion that integrates the slide as part of the name so it doesn’t serve so much as a description of what Mid-Valley Pathology does so much as acts as an enhancer to the name that helps make it more intriguing, more attention grabbing and much more meaningful.

logo layout with a jumping environment-friendly frog designed for a family fun center in Durham, North Carolina.

Cool Springs | Logo Design | Retail Branding

The Cool Springz Trampoline Park was a very cool project to work on, most likely because a trampoline park is all about fun. It’s also a project that is way out of the norm of the kinds of jobs which come my way, I’ve done dozens of logo designs for surgeons, dental experts, and attorneys but Cool Springz is without question the only trampoline park which I have ever gotten the opportunity to work on.

Given that the full name of the company features the word springz in its name the clear choice would have been to integrate a couple of springs into the concept but Cool Springz is a fun place to go and spring doesn’t actually reflect an atmosphere of fun does it. My thought process on this logo project went from springs (boring) to what jumps around, kangaroos … but kangaroos are cute and this place is cool, in the end I landed on a green tree frog and a dimensional treatment of the title itself to give the logo a much more enthusiastic high energy feel.

In the end, Cool Springz ended up loving my concept and named the frog Jax and integrated him in to everything they utilized for advertising. I also think this is the only time that a logo I created was turned into a mascot when they had an employee costume fashioned to look exactly like my frog design.

photography logo design featuring a group of birds, a hill, a route, a stream, and also a tree - designed for Durham, North Carolina travel digital photographer.

Travel Don’t Wander | Logo Design | Website Design

Travel Don’t Wander was a logo design job I took on for a travel photographer, which is a fairly specialized field of photography and I believe it is a niche field because travel photographers don’t shoot locations or things but rather convey emotional journeys by means of the pictures they record. The thought behind this logo composition was to make use of negative space to project more than what was visible upon first view, which I think is quintessential of most professional photographers in that they frequently convey entire stories through their photography.

It’s said that a picture is worth a thousand words but I think that some photographs convey considerably more than that because their photos frequently have an emotional fullness that can’t be revealed with just words. I attempted to do something the same to this logo design by making use of the positive space in the design to say one thing and then at the same time using the negative space to expand upon what was conveyed through the first impression. I think, in hindsight, that my goal was to both brand this photographer with a memorable  Durham logo design but also to show the depth of her work and in the way that she perceives the world through the lens of her camera.

Durham logo design with a seagull made use of for the letter A. Designed for a cordless retail service.

Coastal Wireless | Logo Design

The bulk of logo design projects that I take on I honestly take pleasure in and the Coastal Wireless design was one that I really felt good about, but the customer didn’t quite share my excitement for it. I felt really good about the concept of using the seagull silhouette as a stroke in the letter A however my client, while he liked the concept, really did not care for my choice of birds. This particular guy really despised seagulls, which he referred to as the “rats of the sky”, fortunately the rest of his friends and family did not share his hatred for this specific variety of sea bird.

When I turn a design over to a client I encourage all of them to share it with friends and colleagues and family members as well as with other people that they don’t even know so as to get honest point of views on the worthiness of a design concept. Fortunately, he discussed it with his family and they loved the concept and were able to reason with him and get him to sign off on it, but not before he worked me over to insert every other seabird he could think of … eventually I was able to talk him out of his alternative of a pelican and he proceeded with the original design.

Business logos are a strange creature in the design world because the people that tend to hire a professional to design their business logo realize how crucial a logo design is for their business so they are much more invested in the end result. Every logo job possesses it’s share of obstacles, but the largest challenge is finding that sweet spot in a design that works really well at the task it’s needed to do in branding a company and also providing the client the identity they see for themselves.

a red panda logo layout with bamboo behind-the-scenes, layout for Durham, North Carolina book author

Red Panda Publishers | Logo Design

The book spine is a slender parcel of real estate to work with, but it really is the most essential part of a published book due to the fact that it is ordinarily the primary thing a person sees in the book shop. Concerning a publisher, it’s the opportunity they will ever get to spotlight their product and get their logo design in front of the men and women that purchase actual books.

This three color design is vibrant, picturesque and eye-catching and it gives plenty of area for the title and the author’s name.

Air LA logo made for an airline company in Los Angeles, the logo design has 2 letter A's with benches changed to suggest they are wings.

Air LA | Logo Design

Airlines come and go yet it seems that in many occurrences 1 of the things consumers tend to remember the most are their logos. The Air LA logo design was done for a small startup commuter/shuttle airline company situated in LA and although I’m not certain it really “took off” their business logo didn’t ground them. The bookend A’s in their brand lent itself well to imparting a sense of flight and it was undoubtedly a winner.

Durham logo design used for marketing as well as a label layout for Vintage Instance includes an old-fashioned font style.

Vintage Case | Logo Design

Vintage case focused in brand new cases for musical instruments, that looked to be much older cases. For this brand concept I sought to come up with a logo that had a fluid vintage feel to it and could easily be utilized for everything from a website to a label on brand new cases that appeared like they were from a different point in time.

Logo produced for an orthodontist in Durham, North Carolina, layout include an arc with lines converging through it to suggest metal dental braces.

Kujak Orthodontics | Logo Design | Sign Design

Dental logos can be one of the most challenging logo design projects considering that it seems that each and every dentist includes a smile, a tooth, a smiling tooth, or a toothy smile in their design. Dentistry logo designs are one of the most cliche ridden fields when it comes to business advertising, if dining establishments approached their branding in the very same way dental offices do every one of their company logos would be a picture explaining anything they served, McDonalds would likely include an image of a potato and a cow.

I recognize the thinking behind adding an image of something mouth related to a dentist’s logo design but it has to be performed subtly or it will just look like every other clipart dentists logo that litter the branding landscape of the dentistry profession.

I really love doing dental care logos simply because it challenges me to come up with a design that implies dentistry or a specific field of dentistry like orthodontics without resorting to the clichéd approach that so many dentists settle on.

Kujak Orthodontics provided such an opportunity and ultimately I created a layout that doesn’t have a single smile or a tooth in it, but even though they aren’t overt, they are still implied in the design. When I turned this concept over to the client the only smile that was obvious was actually the smile on Dr. Kujak’s face.

William McNally logo design created for a family nonprofit, the logo includes 4 characters surprised in elevation to represent a family unit with in the style.

William McNally | Logo Design | Branding

The William McNally Family Foundation contacted ImageCo to help them come up with a custom logo design that would be illustrative of the love that William McNally had for the families in his community. The majority of logos with the name “family” in them tend to contain images of a happy family, a cliche heavy method to any logo design is to be overly literal about what the name says or the industry it represents. I’ve found that the best designs are the ones that are downplayed and don’t hit the viewer on the head with what the company or organization wishes to relate.

The McNally Foundation’s name presented a unique opportunity to do a custom logo design that communicated that they were about families without being openly tacky about it. The goal of a logo is to be remembered and recognized and if the designer attempts to use the logo to describe how individuals should think or feel they don’t understand the goal of a logo. If viewers have to consider a logo design to understand what it means, it has been in vain, a logo needs to be instantly understood and a logo design that explains itself will never have the chance to be understood.

Logo style produced for a hair design studio featuring a script font a hummingbird and a suggested orchid for the letter O.

Wild Orchid Studio | Logo Design Project

Wild Orchid Studios desired a business logo which carried a feeling of relaxation and connection for their new hair salon. I came up with a design which didn’t go the obvious direction of designing simply a stylized orchid but instead designed a logo design that suggested a flower in the pattern of a swirl featured in to the letter O in the title and by placing emphasis on the logo design using the figure of a hummingbird hovering over the logo itself. The obvious path in creating a business logo is usually the incorrect direction and in this case, the design ended up not being about the orchid but alternately placed the focus on the perception that they wanted to forecast to their patrons.

Logo design for a software application programmer the layout features and renowned aspect of a bridge to the left of the name.

Smart Kernels | Logo Design

A kernel is the central part of an operating system (OS). Generally, the kernel is responsible for memory administration, process and task control, and hard drive managing. The kernel connects the system hardware to the application software. In other words a kernel is {essentially|quite literally a bridge that performs as a bridge in between the software program and computer hardware.

The logo I came up with for Smart Kernels was based on an actual bridge that is situated a few miles from the offices of Smart kernels. It’s a logo design that doesn’t attempt to explain anything to anyone regarding to what business they are in or how it relates to their specific location. Nevertheless it symbolized something to the business owner of the business and in quite a few cases the significance supporting a company logo is just as important as how it brands the business it stands for.

A logo design featuring a fisherman in the center of the name casting a fly in the direction of the customer.

On The Fly | Logo Design | Retail Branding

With companies like Cabelas and Bass Pros raking in more than 7 billion a year retailing goods and equipment to outdoor sporting lovers the founders of On the Fly understood the market place was ready for an outdoor sporting merchant that operates as a consignment firm. Whether you are into boating, angling or mountain climbing, or even hunting, On the Fly provides a location for outdoor sports enthusiasts with all sorts of interests, a location to market their secondhand equipment to other sports enthusiasts. I designed their Durham business logo dsign utilizing a graphic which grabs the interest of vehicles and sends an image that calls to mind the passion of the outdoors. With visitor traffic that averages 45 mph I realized it would take more than the average logo/sign to get commuters to take notice, hence the illustration of a fly fisherman in his natural and peaceful habitat.
Logo layout MQ farms, this logo layout has an area included into the letter Q.

MQ Farms | Logo Design | Branding

The MQ farms business logo design wasn’t actually created for an Durham, North Carolina area farm it was in reality designed for a commodities broker, and this business logo was one of a handful of which fell underneath the MQ umbrella … MQ commodities was one, MQ trading was another. The aim was really to design a graphic that projected assurance, success, and wealth.

Durham Logo design for a nonprofit, Turning Point Solutions - the logo layout attribute for outwardly facing arrow and also the arrowheads suggest that it is a ruby form.

Turning Point Foundation | Logo Design

The Turning Point Foundation was completely open to what kind of logo design they wanted, this can be a good thing or a bad thing. Good in that it offers a designer the liberty to investigate any concept that comes to mind, bad in that it’s challenging to hit a bullseye in the absence of understanding where the target is. Luckily, in this particular case, I struck a bullseye with the first shot.

Logo created for the use of an indicator for the restaurant (Brewgrrs), it is an elaborate manuscript typeface that is similar to a popular sports group logo design.

Brewgrrs Restaurant | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

I have crafted dozens of restaurant business logos and establishment signs for restaurants, diners, sports bars, night clubs, dining establishments|eateries} all over the United States, from cupcake bakeries to pizza parlors and oyster bars, out of all of them I believe Brewgrrs was my absolute favorite. Brewgrrs was a neat project where I worked directly with the proprietor to design a business logo that worked extremely well and did a fantastic job to brand them, it functioned on everything on everything from coasters, and tap handles all the way to the neon signage which hung above their doors, and was highly visible and very easy to read from over a block away.
