Matthews Logo Design

Nearly every new Matthews business realizes that they need a logo, yet few entrepreneurs thoroughly understand the crucial role their logo will play in their financial success, or why one logo design works far better than another. A logo design has an instant and lasting impact on the financial success of a business, select the right one and it can make the door swing and phone ring, choose the wrong one and it can be an obstacle and a hindrance for the life of a business. The logos presented in the ImageCo portfolio help Matthews businesses prosper, they are effective in any given circumstance and the reason they are so effective is because they all have these 5 things in common.
  1. Simplicity: simple logos don’t require scrutiny, they can be grasped in merely a glimpse.
  2. Scalability: from business cards to signboards a scalable logo design will be legible and equally emotive at every scale.
  3. Versatility: logos that function on any type of device, in print, on packaging, on a mobile phone, or on a ball cap.
  4. Suitability: they are appropriate, they are personal, and they are suitable for the company they represent.
  5. Relevance: a business logo should be ageless and should feel relevant today, tomorrow, and twenty years from today.

Retro logo style of a bike created for a Matthews coffee cafe as well as a coffee roaster.

Ferry Street Coffee Company | Logo Design | Retail Branding

This start-up coffee roaster and coffee bar were actually launching in an older part of the community and wished to visualize an old-fashioned vibe without coming across as stodgy or low energy. I fulfilled both tasks by means of creating a logo design that includes a man on a high wheel bicycle (aka The Penny Farthing), it is antiquated, high energy, and is a ageless business image.

clinical logo design with a microscopic lense slide as well as germs created for Matthews clinical clinic.

Mid-Valley Pathology | Logo Design

Pathology is the science which investigates the root causes and outcomes of diseases, especially the field of healthcare which deals with the laboratory examination of specimens of human body cellular material for diagnostic or forensic reasons.

The Mid-Valley Pathology logo design I came up with is really the only instance I remember where I was in a position to incorporate a bacteria-laden microscope slide within a logo design.

Usually I try not to be excessively literal with a concept and to a point, this design approaches the company it serves fairly literally, however it does it in a way that integrates the slide as part of the name so it doesn’t serve so much as a description of what Mid-Valley Pathology does so much as acts as an enhancement to the name that makes it more intriguing, more attention grabbing and more unforgettable.

logo layout with a leaping environment-friendly frog created for a family members enjoyable center in Matthews.

Cool Springz | Logo Design | Retail Branding

The Cool Springz Trampoline Park was a very fun project to work on, most likely because a trampoline park is all about fun. It’s also a project that is way out of the norm of the sorts of jobs which come my way, I’ve produced dozens of logo designs for physicians, dental professionals, and lawyers but Cool Springz is without question the only trampoline park which I have actually ever gotten the privilege to work on.

Given that the full name of the business features the word springz in its name the obvious choice would have been to feature a couple springs into the design but Cool Springz is a fun destination to go and spring does not actually reflect an environment of fun does it. My thought process on this project went from springs (boring) to what jumps around, kangaroos … but kangaroos are cute and this place is cool, in the end I landed on a green tree frog and a dimensional treatment of the name itself to give the logo a more lively high energy mood.

In the end, Cool Springz ended up loving my brainchild and named the frog Jax and integrated him in to everything they utilized for advertising and marketing. I also believe this is the only time that a logo I did was made into a mascot when they had an employee costume fashioned to look just like my frog design.

digital photography logo design featuring a flock of birds, a mountain, a route, a stream, as well as a tree - developed for Matthews travel professional photographer.

Travel Don’t Wander | Logo Design | Website Design

Travel Don’t Wander was a custom logo design job I took on for a travel photographer, which is a fairly specialized field of photography and I think it is a niche speciality due to the fact that travel photographers tend not to shoot places or things but instead communicate emotional journeys through the images they record. The thought behind this logo design was to utilize negative space to communicate more than what was visible upon initial glance, which I think is representative of almost all professional photographers in that they frequently share whole stories using their photography.

It’s said that a picture is worth a 1000 words but I think that some photographs convey a great deal more than that because their photos frequently have an emotional fullness which can’t be revealed with mere words. I tried to do something much the same to this logo by using the positive space in the design to suggest one thing and then at the same time using the negative space to expand upon what was conveyed through the first impression. I think, in hindsight, that my goal was to both brand this photographer with a memorable  Matthews logo design but also to reveal the depth to her work and in the way that she sees the world through the lens of her camera.

Matthews logo layout with a seagull used for the letter A. Designed for a cordless retail service.

Coastal Wireless | Logo Design

The bulk of business logo design projects that I take on I really take pleasure in and the Coastal Wireless project was one that I certainly felt good about, but the customer didn’t quite share my enthusiasm for it. I felt really good about the concept of using the seagull silhouette as a stroke in the letter A but my customer, even though he loved the concept, didn’t care for my choice of birds. This man really loathed seagulls, which he referred to as the “rats of the sky”, luckily the rest of his family members did not share his scorn for this specific type of sea bird.

When I turn a concept over to a customer I encourage all of them to discuss it with colleagues and family as well as with other people that they don’t actually know so as to get unbiased judgements on the value of a concept. Fortunately, he talked about it with his family and they really loved the design and were able to reason with him and get him to sign off on it, but not before he worked me over to incorporate every other seabird he could think of … ultimately I was able to talk him out of his alternative of a pelican and he proceeded with the original concept.

Business logos are a strange creature in the design world because the people that tend to hire an expert to create their business logo recognize how important a logo design is for their organization so they are much more invested in the final result. Every logo job has it’s share of challenges, but the greatest challenge is finding that sweet spot in a design that functions really well at the task it’s required to do in branding a business and also giving the customer the image they see for themselves.

a red panda logo style with bamboo in the background, design for Matthews publication publisher

Red Panda Publishers | Logo Design

The book spine is a cramped parcel of real estate to work with, nevertheless it is the most vital part of a printed book since it is in most cases the primary thing a person views in the bookstore. For a publishing company, it’s the opportunity that they will likely ever have to advertise their product and get their logo design in front of the men and women that purchase actual books.

This 3 color design is vibrant, picturesque and eye-catching and it gives plenty of area for the title and the author’s name.

Air LA logo design designed for an airline in Los Angeles, the logo has 2 letter A's with benches changed to indicate they are wings.

Air LA | Logo Design

Airlines arrive and depart nevertheless it looks like that in many cases one of the traits people often tend to recall the most are their logos. The Air LA logo design was done for a small fledgling commuter/shuttle air service situated in LA and although I’m not certain it actually “took off” their organization logo didn’t slow them. The bookend A’s in their name lent itself well to affording a spirit of flight and it was certainly a winner.

Matthews logo layout utilized for advertising as well as a tag layout for Vintage Situation includes an old font layout.

Vintage Case | Logo Design

Vintage case specialized in brand-new cases for musical instruments, which seemed to be vintage cases. For this business logo concept I strove to come up with a logo that offered a fluid retro feel to it and could easily be utilized for everything from a web page to an insignia on brand new cases that looked like they were from another point in time.

Logo design created for an orthodontist in Matthews, style include an arc with lines converging via it to suggest metal braces.

Kujak Orthodontics | Logo Design | Sign Design

Dentistry logo designs can be one of the most difficult logo design jobs because it seems that every single dentist features a smile, a tooth, a smiling tooth, or a toothy smile in their design. Dentistry logos are one of the most cliche ridden fields when it comes to small business marketing, if dining establishments approached their advertising in the same way dental practitioners do every one of their company logos would definitely be a picture trying to explain something they served, McDonalds would probably have an image of a potato and a cow.

I understand the thinking behind incorporating an illustration of something mouth associated to a dentist’s logo design but it has to be done subtly or it will just look like every other clipart dentists logo that litter the branding landscape of the dentistry industry.

I really love doing dentistry logo designs because it challenges me to come up with a design that implies the field of dentistry or a specific area of dentistry like orthodontics without resorting to the clichéd solution that so many dentists settle on.

Kujak Orthodontics offered such an opportunity and ultimately I created a layout that doesn’t have a solitary smile or a tooth in it, but even though they aren’t overt, they are still implied in the design. When I turned this particular concept over to the client the only smile that was obvious was actually the smile on Dr. Kujak’s face.

William McNally logo design designed for a household not-for-profit, the logo includes 4 personalities surprised in height to represent a family unit with in the design.

William McNally | Logo Design | Branding

The William McNally Family Foundation asked ImageCo to help them come up with a logo design that would be depictive of the love that William McNally had for the residents in his community. The majority of logos with the name “family” in them tend to contain portrayals of a happy family, a cliche heavy strategy to any logo design is to be very literal about what the name says or the industry it represents. I’ve discovered that the best designs are the ones that are downplayed and don’t hit the viewer on the head with what the company or organization wishes to communicate.

The McNally Foundation’s name offered a distinct opportunity to do a logo design that conveyed that they were about families without being overtly cheesy about it. The intention of a logo is to be remembered and recognized and if the designer tries to use the logo to illustrate exactly how individuals should think or feel they don’t understand the mission of a logo. If viewers have to think about a logo to understand what it means, it has failed, a logo needs to be immediately understood and a logo that illustrates itself will never have the chance to be comprehended.

Logo style created for a hair style workshop featuring a script font a hummingbird and also a suggested orchid for the letter O.

Wild Orchid Studio | Logo Design Project

Wild Orchid Studios required a company logo that carried a spirit of contentment and class for their new hair salon. I came up with a concept that did not go the obvious direction of designing just a stylized orchid but instead crafted a logo that implied a flower in the pattern of a swirl incorporated into the letter O in the title and by putting emphasis on the concept along with the figure of a hummingbird hovering above the logo design itself. The obvious path in designing a company logo is in most cases the wrong course and in this case, the design ended up not being about the flower but instead laid the focus on the feeling that they really wanted to transmit to their patrons.

Logo layout for a software programmer the design attributes as well as famous element of a bridge to the left of the name.

Smart Kernels | Logo Design

A kernel is the key component of an operating system (OS). Typically, the kernel is responsible for memory management, process and task management, and disk operations. The kernel unites the computer hardware to the application software. In other words a kernel is {essentially|quite literally a bridge that serves as a connection between the software program and hardware.

The logo I came up with for Smart Kernels was based on an actual bridge that is situated a number of miles from the business offices of Smart kernels. It’s a logo design that doesn’t attempt to identify anything to anyone with regards to what business they are in or how it relates to their specific location. However it symbolized something to the owner of the business and in many cases the symbolism behind a logo design is just as important as how it serves the organization it stands for.

A logo style including an angler in the center of the name casting a fly in the direction of the viewer.

On The Fly | Logo Design | Retail Branding

With companies like Cabelas and Bass Pros raking in over 7 billion a year retailing goods and equipment to outdoor sporting enthusiasts the owners of On the Fly realized the market was primed for an outdoor sporting retailer that functions as a consignment company. Whether or not you are into boating, sportfishing or mountain climbing, or even hunting, On the Fly presents a venue for outdoor sports enthusiasts with all types of passions, a place to market their previously owned products to other sports enthusiasts. I created their Matthews logo dsign using a graphic which garners the interest of traffic and sends an image that wakens the passion of the outdoors. With visitor traffic that averages forty five miles per hour I realized it would take more than the typical logo/sign to get commuters to take notice, hence the illustration of a fly fisherman in his natural and tranquil habitat.
Logo design MQ ranches, this logo design has actually an area integrated right into the letter Q.

MQ Farms | Logo Design | Branding

The MQ farms logo concept wasn’t actually produced for an Matthews regional farm it was actually developed for a products broker, and this particular company logo was one of multiple that fell under the MQ umbrella … MQ commodities was one, MQ trading was another. Logo created for the use of an indication for the dining establishment (Brewgrrs), it is an elaborate script font that is evocative a famous sports group logo.

Brewgrrs Restaurant | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

I’ve crafted loads of restaurant custom logo designs and business signs for restaurants, diners, sports bars, night clubs, dining establishments|eateries} all over the US, from cupcake bakeshops to pizza parlors and oyster bars, out of all of them I believe Brewgrrs was my absolute favorite. Brewgrrs was a great undertaking in which I worked directly with the business owner to create a logo which worked really well and did a great job to brand them, it worked on everything on everything from coasters, and tap handles all the way to the neon sign which hung above their doors, and was highly visible and very legible from over a block away.
