STRATEGIES FOR SELECTING THE BEST LOGO DESIGNER

BUDGET

A logo is an investment in both your time and your money so when a design agency presents a money back guarantee try to keep in mind that they can’t reimburse the amount of time you invest which is much more precious than your money is.

PORTFOLIO

Many design firms talk a good game but inevitably a designer can only be determined from the quality of their portfolio, if the work in their design portfolio does not contain real life examples chances are they will not be able to produce a premium logo design.

VISION

A logo’s aim is to be understood and remembered, and it’s purpose is to reflect your unique vision for your business. If a designer isn’t focused on fulfilling your vision, the thing they are really focused on is how fast they will get paid.

Portsmouth LOGO DESIGN

For over 20 years ImageCo has been helping business owners cultivate notable brand identities. We have undertaken branding work for mechanics, universities, diamond miners, wedding singers, coffee roasters, retail stores, and virtually every other kind of business concern you can envision. What makes us different compared to our competitors is that our background is rooted in the electrical sign industry so we approach every logo design project as if it will be employed as an electrical sign. As a result of our sign first technique our identity designs can, and have been employed in everything from clothing labels to neon signs. Our sign first technique insures that our logos are just as reliable whether they are used in television commercials or web apps, they are consistently recognizable, understood, and always remembered regardless of scale or function.

American Made ★ Design

The thing that truly sets ImageCo apart from other design agencies that you probably have encountered in Google’s search results, companies like Thumbtack, Design Hill, Upwork, or Crowdspring is that absolutely every project we are retained to perform, we do in-house. Regardless of the kind of project we take on, business logo, business website, trade show banners, or retail sign, we do not, and never will farm out our client’s work to 3rd parties based outside the US. Whenever you phone us at 1-855-IMAGECO the party that picks up the telephone is ImageCo’s owner and designer, not a go-between that marks up the price of your project and determines the terms of how my customers and I conduct business.

CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE LOGO DESIGN

It’s likely that every new Portsmouth business understands that they need a logo, but few new business owners entirely recognize the essential role their logo design will perform in their success, or why one logo performs better than another. A logo has a critical and long-term impact on the prosperity of a business, go with the correct one and it can make the door swing and cash register ring, select the wrong one and it can be an obstacle and a hindrance for the life span of a company. The logos featured in the ImageCo portfolio help Portsmouth businesses prosper, they are effective in any given circumstance and the reason they are so effective is because they all have these five things in common.
  1. Simplicity: simple logos don’t need deliberation, they can be comprehended in merely a glance.
  2. Scalability: from clothing labels to posters a scalable business logo will stay legible and just as emotive at virtually any scale.
  3. Versatility: logos that work on any type of device, in print, on packaging, on a mobile phone, or on a ball-cap.
  4. Suitability: they are appropriate, they feel personal, and they are suitable for the item or business they represent.
  5. Relevance: a logo needs to be timeless and will feel equally relevant today, tomorrow, and 20 years from now.

understand your brand

Brand – It is a verb and a noun, it is an identifying mark and the act of marking something to ensure that it could be recognized, its foundation originates from the mark branded onto livestock. These days a brand symbolizes basically anything with a motive, regardless of whether it be profit or government agencies, a brand is an intrinsic aspect of specifying the value of a specific thing in the public’s mind.

Branding – Is sort of like advertising and marketing’s sexy sister, they are both from the exact same family, the distinction being that marketing and advertising are about making a promise and branding’s goal is to deliver on that promise. Branding is also a calculated popularity contest directed at a specific audience, it’s goal is to develop a mental image that the target market can relate to.

Brand Image – An image planted and nurtured by advertising and marketing and also identity design. When someone mentions the brand names Lamborghini or Mustang what we think about is their brand image, it’s a picture that exists in our minds. That image isn’t an image of an automobile with 4 wheels that can move us from point A to point B, the the mental image we have (or at least I have) is of speed, beauty, of something dangerous and unique . That is brand image and that is what makes people want those products. Brand image is why people get most things, from Nike to Adidas Chevy or Ford, Democrats or Republicans … all driven by brand images that people can relate to.

Branding Firms – If you reflect on the origin of the majority of branding agencies you’ll discover that they are quite often rebranded advertising companies. When somebody says they are in marketing most people will likely have a preconceived notion about the type of work they do anything that can be seen, touched or heard become part of a brand identity.

Brand Identity Designers
– A brand identity designer is a graphic designer that concentrates on a kind of visual design that helps form the image of a business, a product or a company. Brand identity designers create logo designs, sign designs, packaging, and also collateral material such as cards, stationery, and also sales brochures. Some identity designers also build web sites and user interfaces. The important role of a brand identity designer is to develop the visual cues and an emotional tone with the goal of influencing activities, results and perceptions.

select logos & signs

Retro logo style of a bicycle developed for a Portsmouth coffee cafe and a coffee roaster.

Ferry Street Coffee Company | Logo Design | Retail Branding

This startup coffee roaster and cafe were actually opening in an older part of the town and really wanted to cast a retro tone without appearing as boring or low energy. I achieved the two jobs by means of designing a symbol design that contains a man on a high wheel bicycle (aka The Penny Farthing), it is old-fashioned, higher energy, and is a timeless business image.

medical logo layout with a microscope slide as well as germs made for Portsmouth medical center.

Mid-Valley Pathology | Logo Design

Pathology is the scientific discipline that examines the root causes and outcomes of diseases, mainly the field of healthcare that works with the laboratory evaluation of samplings of human body tissue for diagnostic or forensic reasons.

The Mid-Valley Pathology logo I came up with is really the only instance I recall in which I was able to incorporate a bacteria-laden microscope slide within a business logo design.

Normally I attempt not to be excessively literal with a design and to a point, this specific design approaches the company it serves very literally, yet it does it in a way that integrates the slide as part of the name so it doesn’t serve so much as an illustration of what Mid-Valley Pathology does so much as acts as an enhancement to the name that helps make it more intriguing, more attention grabbing and more unforgettable.

logo style with a leaping green frog created for a family members enjoyable center in Portsmouth.

Cool Springz | Logo Design | Retail Branding

The Cool Springz Trampoline Park was a really fun project to work on, most likely because a trampoline park is all about fun. It’s additionally a project that is way out of the norm of the types of projects which come my way, I’ve done dozens of logo designs for health care providers, dental experts, and attorneys but Cool Springz is without question the only trampoline park which I have actually ever gotten the opportunity to work on.

Given that the title of the business has the word springz in its name the apparent choice would have been to include a some springs into the concept but Cool Springz is a fun destination to go and spring doesn’t really reflect an environment of fun does it. My thought process on this logo design project went from springs (boring) to what jumps around, kangaroos … but kangaroos are cute and this place is cool, eventually I landed on a green tree frog and a dimensional treatment of the title itself to give the logo a more enthusiastic high energy feeling.

In the end, Cool Springz ended up loving my design and named the frog Jax and featured him in to everything they used for marketing. I also believe this is the only time that a logo I did was made into a mascot when they had a staff member costume fashioned to look exactly like my frog design.

digital photography logo design featuring a group of birds, a mountain, a path, a stream, and also a tree - developed for Portsmouth traveling digital photographer.

Travel Don’t Wander | Logo Design | Website Design

Travel Don’t Wander was a logo project I took on for a travel photographer, which is a rather specialized field of photography and I think it is a niche field because travel photographers tend not to capture locations or things but instead convey emotional journeys by means of the pictures they capture. The idea behind this logo design was to use negative space to reveal more than what was visible upon first view, which I think is quintessential of almost all good photographers in that they often convey whole stories through their photography.

It’s said that a picture is worth a thousand words but I think that some photographs convey a great deal more than that because their photos frequently have an emotional resonance which can’t be communicated with just words. I attempted to do something the same to this logo by using the positive space in the design to voice one thing and then at the same time using the negative space to expand upon what was conveyed through the first impression. I think, in looking back, that my goal was to both brand this photographer with a memorable  Portsmouth logo design but also to reveal the depth to her work and in the way that she sees the world through the lens of her camera.

Portsmouth logo design with a seagull utilized for the letter A. Designed for a cordless retail business.

Coastal Wireless | Logo Design

The lion’s share of logo design jobs that I take on I truly take pleasure in and the Coastal Wireless project was one that I really felt good about, however the client didn’t quite share my excitement for it. I felt really good about the concept of using the seagull form as a stroke in the character A however the client, while he liked the concept, didn’t care for my choice of birds. This man really despised seagulls, which he referred to as the “rats of the sky”, fortunately the rest of his friends and family did not share his aversion for this specific kind of sea bird.

When I turn a design over to a customer I urge all of them to talk about it with friends and family as well as with other people that they don’t even know so as to get objective viewpoints on the merit of a design concept. Fortunately, he discussed it with his whole family and they adored the design and were able to persuade him and get him to sign off on it, but not before he worked me over to insert every other seabird he could think of … in the end I was able to talk him out of his alternative of a pelican and he went with the original concept.

Business logos are a weird creature in the design world because the people that have a tendency to hire an expert to design their logo design understand how crucial a logo design is for their company so they are much more invested in the outcome. Every logo project has it’s share of challenges, but the biggest challenge is finding that sweet spot in a design that works really well at the task it’s required to do in branding a business and also giving the client the identity they see for themselves.

a red panda logo style with bamboo in the background, design for Portsmouth book publisher

Red Panda Publishers | Logo Design

The book spine is a cramped parcel of real estate to work with, but it really is the most essential part of a printed book considering that it is usually the primary thing a person views in the book store. Regarding a publisher, it’s the most ideal opportunity that they will ever have to spotlight their label and get their logo design in front of the individuals that purchase actual books.

This 3 color design is vivid, picturesque and eye-catching and it gives plenty of territory for the title and the author’s name.

Air LA logo design developed for an airline in Los Angeles, the logo has 2 letter A's with the bars changed to indicate they are wings.

Air LA | Logo Design

Airlines arrive and go yet it seems that in many instances one of the things people usually tend to remember the most are their logos. The Air LA logo design was done for a smaller new venture commuter/shuttle airline company based in LA and while I’m not sure it actually “took off” their business logo didn’t ground them. The bookend A’s in their brand lent itself well to imparting a sense of flight and it was undoubtedly a success.

Portsmouth logo style made use of for advertising and a tag layout for Vintage Case features an archaic typeface layout.

Vintage Case | Logo Design

Vintage case specialized in all new cases for musical instruments, which looked to be antique cases. For this logo concept I sought to come up with a logo that offered a fluid old-fashioned feel to it and could easily be used for everything from a web site to a label on brand new cases that looked like they were from a different point in time.

Logo created for an orthodontist in Portsmouth, design include an arc with lines intersecting with it to indicate metal braces.

Kujak Orthodontics | Logo Design | Sign Design

Dental care logo designs can be one of the most challenging logo design projects due to the fact that it seems that almost every dental professional involves a smile, a tooth, a smiling tooth, or a toothy smile in their design. Dentistry logos are one of the most cliche ridden professions when it comes to small business branding, if dining establishments approached their branding in the very same way dental practices do every one of their company logos would definitely be a picture explaining something they served, McDonalds would probably contain an image of a potato and a cow.

I recognize the thinking behind incorporating a likeness of something mouth associated to a dentist’s logo design nevertheless it has to be done subtly or it will just look like every other clipart dentists logo that litter the branding landscape of the dental industry.

I actually love doing dentistry logo designs simply because it challenges me to come up with a design that implies the field of dentistry or a certain area of the field of dentistry like orthodontics without resorting to the clichéd solution that so many dentists settle on.

Kujak Orthodontics delivered such an opportunity and inevitably I created a layout that doesn’t have a solitary smile or a tooth in it, but even though they aren’t obvious, they are still suggested in the concept. When I turned this particular design over to the customer the only smile that was obvious was actually the smile on Dr. Kujak’s face.

William McNally logo created for a family members not-for-profit, the logo design includes 4 personalities staggered in elevation to represent a family with in the design.

William McNally | Logo Design | Branding

The William McNally Family Foundation contacted ImageCo to help them come up with a logo design that would be depictive of the devotion that William McNally had for the families in his community. The majority of logos with the name “family” in them tend to contain images of a happy family, a cliche heavy strategy to any logo design is to be overly literal pertaining to what the name says or the industry it represents. I’ve found that the best concepts are the ones that are downplayed and don’t hit the viewer on the head with what the business or institution wants to project.

The McNally Foundation’s name presented a unique opportunity to do a custom logo design which conveyed that they were about families without being overtly cheesy about it. The aim of a logo is to be remembered and recognized and if the designer attempts to use the logo to explain how individuals ought to think or feel they don’t understand the goal of a logo. If people have to consider a logo design to understand what it means, it has fallen short, a logo needs to be instantly understood and a logo design that describes itself will never have the likelihood to be comprehended.

Logo design created for a Portsmouth hair layout workshop including a manuscript font a hummingbird and an implied orchid for the letter O.

Wild Orchid Studio | Logo Design Project

Wild Orchid Studios desired a logo design that related a feeling of calmness and connection for their new hair studio. I came up with a concept that did not go the obvious path of making simply a stylized orchid but alternatively crafted a logo which implied a flower in the formation of a swirl blended into the letter O in the title and by placing emphasis on the concept using the silhouette of a hummingbird floating above the logo itself. The obvious path in designing a logo design is frequently the wrong route and in this case, the design ended up not being about the orchid but instead placed the emphasis on the emotion that they wanted to forecast to their patrons.

Arabian equine logo style created for a steed ranch that concentrates on breeding Arabian program steeds.

Dazzo Arabians | Logo Design

ImageCo designed a one-of-a-kind organization logo design tailored to embody the unique physical traits of the Arabian type of horses. With a different head form and very high tail carriage, the Arabian is one of the most immediately identifiable horse breeds in the world.

Las Cafe, A Portsmouth Coffee shop logo style a small dining establishment, layout consists of a modified script font style which hovers over a group of elaborate lines as well as dots.

Las Cafe | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

Las Coffee shop logo layout a tiny restaurant, design contains a customized script font which hovers above a team of ornate lines and dots.

Logo style for a software application developer the layout functions and iconic Portsmouth component of a bridge to the left of the name.

Smart Kernels | Logo Design

A kernel is the key part of an operating system (OS). Generally, the kernel is responsible for memory administration, process and task control, and disk management. The kernel attaches the system hardware to the application software. In other words a kernel is {essentially|quite literally a bridge that functions as a connection between the software and computer hardware.

The logo design I came up with for Smart Kernels was based on an actual bridge that is located a number of miles from the business offices of Smart kernels. It’s a logo design that doesn’t attempt to explain anything to anyone about what business they are in or how it relates to their specific location. However, it represented something to the owner of the business and in many cases the substance behind a business logo is just as important as how it serves the company it represents.

Evolve logo style developed for a Portsmouthinterior developer, layout function a collection of red circles that converge as well as change the letter O in the middle of the logo layout.

Evolv Interior Design | Logo Design | Branding

Evolv Design is a Portsmouth interior design company and this logo design is representational of the work that an interior designer does in. An interior designer is someone who prepares, investigates, coordinates, and oversees such tasks. Interior design is a diverse occupation that consists of conceptual development, space planning, location evaluations, programming, research, interacting with the stakeholders of a project, construction management, and implementation of the design.

logo layout provided for Advanced Leadership Solutions in Portsmouth, the characters for letter V and also A in center of the word advanced have actually been customized to tie straight into the words below.

Advanced Leadership Solutions | Logo Design | Website Design

This particular Portsmouth logo design job was performed for a leadership advisor that helps business professionals to develop into more successful at overseeing people, expectations, and productivity.

A Portsmouth business logo layout featuring an angler in the center of the name casting a fly towards the audience.

On The Fly | Logo Design | Retail Branding

With brands such as Cabelas and Bass Pros raking in over 7 billion a year retailing supplies and equipment to outdoor sporting fans the owners of On the Fly knew the market was prepared for an outdoor sporting merchant that functions as a consignment firm. Whether you are into boating, sportfishing or mountain climbing, or even hunting, On the Fly provides a location for outdoor sports enthusiasts with all kinds of interests, a place to sell their previously owned equipment to other sports enthusiasts.

I tailored their Portsmouth logo design utilizing an image that garners the attention of traffic and projects an image that wakens the passion of the outdoors. With visitor traffic that averages forty five mph I knew it would take more than the typical logo/sign to get travelers to take notice, hence the illustration of a fly fisherman in his natural and serene habitat.

Logo layout MQ ranches, this Portsmouth company logo style has a field integrated into the letter Q.

MQ Farms | Logo Design | Branding

The MQ farms emblem design wasn’t actually produced for an Portsmouth regional farm it was in reality developed for an investments broker, and this logo design was one of a handful of which fell underneath the MQ umbrella … MQ commodities was one, MQ trading was another. The objective was really to develop a graphic that projected trust, effectiveness, and prosperity.

Portsmouth Logo design for a not-for-profit, Transforming Factor Solutions - the logo layout function for ostensibly facing arrowhead and the arrowheads suggest that it is a ruby shape.

Turning Point Foundation | Logo Design

The Turning Point Foundation was entirely open to what type of logo design that they desired, this can be a good thing or a bad thing. Good in that it provides a designer the liberty to discover any idea that comes to mind, bad in that it’s difficult to hit a bullseye in the absence of knowing where exactly the target is. Thankfully, in this particular case, I nailed a bullseye with the 1st shot.

Logo design created for making use of an indicator for the dining establishment (Brewgrrs), it is an elaborate script typeface that is reminiscent of a popular Portsmouth sporting activities group logo design.

Brewgrrs Restaurant | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

I have created dozens of restaurant logo designs and business signs for restaurants, diners, sports bars, night clubs, dining establishments, and eateries all over the USA, from cupcake bake shops to pizza parlors and oyster bars, out of all of them I think Brewgrrs was my absolute favorite. Brewgrrs was a great undertaking where I worked closely with the proprietor to develop a logo design which worked extremely well and did a fantastic job to brand them, it worked on everything on everything from coasters, and tap handles all the way to the illuminated signage which hung above their doors, and was highly visible and very easy to read from over a block away.
