McLean, Virginia Logo Design

Nearly every new McLean business understands that they are in need of a logo, but few new business owners fully are aware of the vital role their logo will play in their financial success, or exactly why one logo works far better than another. A business logo has an immediate and long-term effect on the prosperity of a business, choose the right one and it can make the door swing and cash register ring, go with the incorrect one and it will be an obstacle and a hindrance for the longevity of an organization.

The logos presented in the ImageCo portfolio help McLean, Virginia businesses succeed, they are effective in any given scenario and the reason they are so effective is that they all have these five things in common.

  1. Simplicity: simple logo designs don’t demand consideration, they can be realized in just a glimpse.
  2. Scalability: from business cards to signboards a scalable business logo will remain legible and just as emotive at every size.
  3. Versatility: logos that function on any device, in print, on product packaging, on a mobile phone, or on a ball cap.
  4. Suitability: they are appropriate, they are exclusive, and they are suitable for the company they stand for.
  5. Relevance: a business logo should be enduring and should feel relevant today, tomorrow, and 20 years from now.

Logo PORTFOLIO Volume 1

Retro logo layout of a bike developed for a McLean, Virginia coffee cafe and a coffee roaster.

Ferry Street Coffee Company | Logo Design | Retail Branding

This fledgling coffee roaster and coffee bar were actually opening in an older part of the area and really wanted to cast a vintage tone without coming across as stodgy or low energy. I fulfilled both jobs via developing a trademark design that includes a man on a high wheel bicycle (aka The Penny Farthing), it is old-fashioned, higher energy, and is a enduring business image.

medical logo style with a microscope slide and also germs developed for McLean, Virginia clinical facility.

Mid-Valley Pathology | Logo Design

Pathology is the science that investigates the triggers and outcomes of diseases, mainly the branch of medicine that works with the clinical assessment of samples of body tissue for diagnostic or forensic purposes.

The Mid-Valley Pathology logo design I came up with is the only instance I recall in which I was in a position to integrate a bacteria-laden microscope slide right into a logo design.

Typically I attempt not to be overly literal with a design and to a point, this specific design approaches the company it serves quite literally, but it does it in a way that incorporates the slide as part of the name so it doesn’t serve so much as an illustration of what Mid-Valley Pathology does so much as acts as an enhancer to the name that helps make it more interesting, more focus grabbing and more unforgettable.

logo design with a leaping green frog made for a household enjoyable center in McLean, Virginia.

Cool Springs | Logo Design | Retail Branding

The Cool Springz Trampoline Park was a really fun project to work on, probably because a trampoline park is all about fun. It’s also a project that is way out of the norm of the types of projects that come my way, I’ve produced dozens of logo designs for surgeons, dentists, and lawyers but Cool Springz is without question the one and only trampoline park which I have actually ever had the privilege to work on.

Given that the title of the company features the word springz in its name the apparent choice would have been to incorporate a handful of springs into the concept but Cool Springz is a fun place to go and spring doesn’t really resonate an atmosphere of fun does it. My thought process on this logo design project went from springs (boring) to what jumps around, kangaroos … but kangaroos are cute and this place is cool, in the end I landed on a green tree frog and a dimensional treatment of the title itself to give the logo a better dynamic high energy atmosphere.

In the end, Cool Springz ended up loving my concept and named the frog Jax and incorporated him in to everything they used for promotion and marketing. I also believe this is the only time that a logo I designed was transformed into a mascot when they had an employee costume fabricated to look just like my frog design.

photography logo design featuring a group of birds, a mountain, a trail, a stream, as well as a tree - made for McLean, Virginia traveling professional photographer.

Travel Don’t Wander | Logo Design | Website Design

Travel Don’t Wander was a logo design job I took on for a travel photographer, which is a fairly specialized field of photography and I think it is a niche profession due to the fact that travel photographers tend not to shoot locations or things but rather project emotional experiences through the photos they record. The thought behind this logo design was to make use of negative space to communicate more than what was visible upon initial glance, which I think is quintessential of the majority of good photographers in that they oftentimes convey whole stories through their photography.

It’s said that a picture is worth a thousand words but I think that some photographs convey significantly more than that because their photos frequently have an emotional resonance which can’t be revealed with mere words. I made an effort to do something the same to this logo design by making use of the positive space in the design to suggest one thing and then at the same time using the negative space to expand upon what was communicated through the first impression. I think, in looking back, that my objective was to both brand this photographer with a memorable  McLean logo design but also to show the depth to her work and in the way that she sees the world through the lens of her camera.

McLean logo design with a seagull used for the letter A. Designed for a wireless retail business.

Coastal Wireless | Logo Design

The bulk of custom logo design projects that I take on I truly enjoy and the Coastal Wireless design was one that I really felt good about, however the customer didn’t quite share my excitement for it. I felt really good about the idea of using the seagull form as a stroke in the character A but the client, while he loved the concept, didn’t care for my choice of birds. This particular guy genuinely hated seagulls, which he referred to as the “rats of the sky”, luckily the rest of his friends and family didn’t share his aversion for this particular breed of sea bird.

When I turn a design over to a client I urge them to discuss it with friends and family as well as with other people that they don’t actually know so as to get objective judgements on the benefit of a concept. Fortunately, he shared it with his whole family and they really loved the design and were able to reason with him and get him to sign off on it, but not before he worked me over to include every other seabird he could think of … eventually I was able to talk him out of his choice of a pelican and he proceeded with the original design.

Custom logo designs are a weird animal in the design world because the people that tend to hire a professional to design their logo design recognize how important a logo is for their business so they are way more invested in the end result. Every logo design job possesses it’s share of obstacles, but the biggest challenge is finding that sweet spot in a design that functions really well at the task it’s needed to do in branding a company and also giving the customer the identity they see for themselves.

a red panda logo design with bamboo behind-the-scenes, layout for McLean, Virginia publication publisher

Red Panda Publishers | Logo Design

The book spine is a narrow slice of real estate to work with, but it really is the most essential part of a printed book since it is in most cases the very first thing a person sees in the book store. For a publishing company, it’s the optimal opportunity that they will likely ever get to spotlight their label and get their logo design in front of the individuals that purchase actual books.

This three color design is vivid, picturesque and eye-catching and it gives plenty of territory for the title and the author’s name.

Air LA logo design created for an airline in Los Angeles, the logo has 2 letter A's with the bars changed to imply they are wings.

Air LA | Logo Design

Airlines come and depart however it looks like that in many instances one of the things consumers often tend to recollect the most are their logos. The Air LA logo design was done for a small startup commuter/shuttle airline company based in LA and although I’m not sure it actually “took off” their business logo didn’t slow them. The bookend A’s in their brand lent itself well to affording a feeling of air travel and it was surely a winner.

McLean logo style made use of for marketing as well as a tag style for Vintage Instance features an old-fashioned typeface style.

Vintage Case | Logo Design

Vintage case focused in all new cases for musical instruments, which seemed to be older cases. For this business logo design I tried to come up with a logo that had a fluid old style feel to it and could easily be utilized for anything from a web page to a label on brand new cases that seemed like they were from another era.

Logo design created for an orthodontist in McLean, Virginia, design consist of an arc with lines converging through it to suggest steel dental braces.

Kujak Orthodontics | Logo Design | Sign Design

Dental business logos can be one of the most challenging logo projects considering that it seems that every single dental professional involves a smile, a tooth, a smiling tooth, or a toothy smile in their design. Dental business logos are one of the most cliche ridden fields when it comes to small business marketing, if restaurants approached their advertising in the exact same way dentists do every one of their logos would definitely be a picture explaining something they served, McDonalds would most likely have a picture of a potato and a cow.

I understand the thinking behind adding an image of something mouth related to a dentist’s logo design nevertheless it has to be done subtly or it will just look like every other clipart dentists logo that litter the branding landscape of the dental care industry.

I actually love doing dental care business logos because it challenges me to come up with a design that implies dentistry or a specific field of the field of dentistry like orthodontics without resorting to the stereotypical solution that so many dentists settle on.

Kujak Orthodontics provided such an opportunity and subsequently I created a concept that doesn’t have a solitary smile or a tooth in it, but even though they aren’t obvious, they are still suggested in the design. When I turned this design over to the client the only smile that was apparent was really the smile on Dr. Kujak’s face.

William McNally logo design made for a family members nonprofit, the logo includes 4 personalities startled in height to represent a family with in the design.

William McNally | Logo Design | Branding

The William McNally Family Foundation asked ImageCo to help them come up with a brand identity design that would be depictive of the love that William McNally had for the people residing in his city. Most logos with the name “family” in them tend to contain depictions of a happy family, a cliche heavy technique to any logo design is to be overly literal with regards to what the name says or the industry it represents. I’ve found that the best designs are the ones that are understated and don’t hit the viewer on the head with what the company or institution hopes to communicate.

The McNally Foundation’s name offered a unique opportunity to do a logo design which conveyed that they were about families without being overtly cheesy about it. The intention of a logo is to be remembered and recognized and if the designer tries to use the logo to explain specifically how people ought to think or feel they don’t understand the goal of a logo. If you have to consider a logo to understand what it means, it has failed, a logo needs to be instantly understood and a logo design that describes itself won’t have the opportunity to be understood.

Logo design produced for a hair layout workshop featuring a manuscript font a hummingbird and also an implied orchid for the letter O.

Wild Orchid Studio | Logo Design Project

Wild Orchid Studios wanted a logo design which carried an atmosphere of simplicity and class for their new hair salon. I came up with a design which didn’t go the obvious direction of making just a stylized orchid but instead delivered a logo design which implied an orchid in the pattern of a swirl featured in to the letter O in the name and by placing attention on the logo design with the silhouette of a hummingbird hovering over the image itself. The obvious path in designing a logo is in most cases the incorrect direction and in this case, the design ended up not being about the flower but alternately laid the attention on the emotion that they really wanted to project to their clients.

Logo design for a software program designer the style attributes as well as iconic component of a bridge to the left of the name.

Smart Kernels | Logo Design

A kernel is the key part of an operating system (OS). Typically, the kernel is responsible for memory management, process and task control, and hard drive managing. The kernel connects the system hardware to the application software. In other words a kernel is {essentially|quite literally a bridge that acts as a bridge between the software program and computer hardware.

The logo design I came up with for Smart Kernels was based on an actual bridge that is located a few miles from the business offices of Smart kernels. It’s a logo design that doesn’t attempt to describe anything to anyone regarding what business they are in or how it relates to their specific location. Nevertheless it intimated something to the owner of the business and in quite a few cases the symbolism supporting a business logo is just as important as how it brands the company it represents.

A logo design featuring a fisherman in the middle of the name casting a fly in the direction of the audience.

On The Fly | Logo Design | Retail Branding

With companies such as Cabelas and Bass Pros raking in over 7 billion a year offering supplies and equipment to outdoor sporting fans the owners of On the Fly realized the market was primed for an outdoor sporting retailer that functions as a consignment company. Whether you are into boating, sportfishing or mountain climbing, or even hunting, On the Fly presents a destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts with all kinds of interests, a spot to sell their pre-owned items to other sports enthusiasts. I created their McLean business logo dsign using an illustration that seizes the interest of traffic and projects an image that evokes the enthusiasm of the outdoors. With visitor traffic that averages forty five mph I knew it would take more than the average logo/sign to get travelers to take notice, hence the illustration of a fly fisherman in his natural and tranquil habitat.
Logo design MQ farms, this logo design has actually a field included right into the letter Q.

MQ Farms | Logo Design | Branding

The MQ farms logo idea wasn’t really designed for an McLean, Virginia area farm it was really developed for a commodities broker, and this particular trademark was one of several which fell underneath the MQ umbrella … MQ commodities was one, MQ trading was another. The end goal was really to design a graphic that projects trust, success, and luxury.

McLean Logo design for a nonprofit, Transforming Point Solutions - the logo layout function for outwardly encountering arrowhead and the arrowheads indicate that it is a diamond shape.

Turning Point Foundation | Logo Design

The Turning Point Foundation was totally open to what kind of logo design they preferred, this can be a good thing or a bad thing. Good in that it offers a designer the opportunity to explore any idea that comes to mind, bad in that it’s challenging to hit a bullseye in the absence of realizing where the target is. Luckily, in this instance, I nailed a bullseye with the first shot.

Logo design developed for using an indicator for the dining establishment (Brewgrrs), it is an elaborate script typeface that is reminiscent of a popular sporting activities group logo.

Brewgrrs Restaurant | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

I’ve created dozens of restaurant custom logo designs and establishment signs for restaurants, diners, sports bars, night clubs, dining establishments|eateries} all over the United States, from cupcake bakeshops to pizza parlors and oyster bars, out of all of them I believe Brewgrrs was my absolute favorite. Brewgrrs was a great project in which I worked directly with the proprietor to design a business logo that worked really well and did a great job to brand them, it functioned on everything on everything from coasters, and tap handles all the way to the neon signage that hung above their doors, and was highly visible and very easy to read from over a block away.
