Roanoke, Virginia Logo Design

Each and every new Roanoke organization understands that they are in need of a logo, but few entrepreneurs thoroughly understand the key role their business logo can play in their financial success, or why one business logo functions better than another. A logo has an immediate and long-term effect on the prosperity of a company, select the correct one and it will make the door swing and cash register ring, choose the wrong one and it can be an obstacle and a hindrance for the life of a company.

The logos featured in the ImageCo portfolio help Roanoke, Virginia companies succeed, they are effective in any given situation and the reason they are so effective is that they all have these five things in common.

  1. Simplicity: simple logos do not require deliberation, they can be understood in merely a look.
  2. Scalability: from labels to movie screens a scalable business logo will be legible and equally emotive at virtually any scale.
  3. Versatility: logos that operate on any sort of device, in print, on product packaging, on a mobile phone, or on a ball-cap.
  4. Suitability: they are appropriate, they are personal, and they are suitable for the business they stand for.
  5. Relevance: a logo design needs to be timeless and should feel as relevant today, tomorrow, and 20 years from now.
Retro logo style of a bike produced for a Roanoke, Virginia coffee cafe as well as a coffee roaster.

Ferry Street Coffee Company | Logo Design | Retail Branding

This start-up coffee roaster and coffee shop were actually opening in an old part of the city and hoped to project a vintage atmosphere without coming across as monotonous or low energy. I achieved both jobs via creating a business logo design that contains a man on a high wheel bicycle (aka The Penny Farthing), it is antiquated, high energy, and is a enduring business image.

medical logo design with a microscopic lense slide and bacteria developed for Roanoke, Virginia medical clinic.

Mid-Valley Pathology | Logo Design

Pathology is the science which researches the triggers and effects of diseases, mainly the field of healthcare that works with the clinical evaluation of samples of human body cellular material for diagnostic or forensic intents.

The Mid-Valley Pathology logo design I came up with is really the only instance I recollect where I was able to incorporate a bacteria-laden microscope slide right into a logo design.

Generally I attempt not to be extremely literal with a design and to a point, this design approaches the company it serves very literally, however it does it in a way that integrates the slide as part of the name so it doesn’t serve so much as a description of what Mid-Valley Pathology does so much as acts as an enhancement to the name that helps make it more intriguing, more attention grabbing and even more unforgettable.

logo design with a leaping green frog created for a family members enjoyable center in Roanoke, Virginia.

Cool Springz | Logo Design | Retail Branding

The Cool Springz Trampoline Park was a really fun project to work on, probably because a trampoline park is all about fun. It’s also a project that is way out of the norm of the sorts of jobs which come my way, I’ve produced dozens of logo designs for health care providers, dental offices, and lawyers but Cool Springz is without question the one and only trampoline park which I have ever had the privilege to work on.

Given that the name of the business has the word springz in its name the clear choice would have been to integrate a some springs into the concept but Cool Springz is a fun location to go and spring does not actually reflect an environment of fun does it. My thought process on this logo design project went from springs (boring) to what jumps around, kangaroos … but kangaroos are cute and this place is cool, ultimately I landed on a green tree frog and a dimensional treatment of the name itself to provide the logo a more enthusiastic high energy feel.

In the end, Cool Springz ended up loving my design and named the frog Jax and incorporated him in to everything they utilized for promotion and marketing. I also believe this is the only time that a logo I did was made into a mascot when they had an employee costume fashioned to look exactly like my frog design.

photography logo design including a group of birds, a mountain, a route, a stream, and also a tree - developed for Roanoke, Virginia traveling professional photographer.

Travel Don’t Wander | Logo Design | Website Design

Travel Don’t Wander was a logo job I took on for a travel photographer, which is a fairly niche field of photography and I think it is a niche profession due to the fact that travel photographers tend not to capture places or things but rather communicate emotional experiences by means of the photos they record. The thought behind this logo composition was to make use of negative space to convey more than what was visible upon first view, which I think is quintessential of most good photographers in that they oftentimes share entire stories using their photography.

It’s said that a picture is worth a 1000 words but I think that some photographs convey much more than that because their photos frequently have an emotional fullness that can’t be revealed with just words. I tried to do something the same to this logo design by utilizing the positive space in the design to suggest one thing and then at the same time using the negative space to expand upon what was communicated through the first impression. I think, in hindsight, that my objective was to both brand this photographer with a memorable  Roanoke logo but also to show the depth to her art and in the way that she perceives the world through the lens of her camera.

Roanoke logo design with a seagull utilized for the letter A. Designed for a wireless retail business.

Coastal Wireless | Logo Design

The lion’s share of business logo design jobs that I take on I seriously relish and the Coastal Wireless project was one that I certainly felt good about, however the customer didn’t quite share my excitement for it. I felt really good about the concept of using the seagull form as a stroke in the character A however my customer, even though he liked the concept, didn’t care for my choice of birds. This particular man truly hated seagulls, which he referred to as the “rats of the sky”, luckily the rest of his family members did not share his scorn for this specific type of sea bird.

When I turn a concept over to a customer I urge them to discuss it with friends and colleagues and family as well as with folks that they don’t actually know so as to get objective assessments on the worthiness of a concept. Fortunately, he shared it with his whole family and they adored the concept and were able to reason with him and get him to sign off on it, but not before he worked me over to insert every other seabird he could think of … in the end I was able to talk him out of his choice of a pelican and he went with the original design.

Logos are a weird animal in the design world given that the people that tend to hire a professional to design their logo realize how essential a logo is for their organization so they are way more invested in the end result. Every logo job has it’s share of obstacles, however the largest challenge is identifying that sweet spot in a design that functions really well at the job it’s needed to do in branding a company and also providing the client the image they see for themselves.

a red panda logo layout with bamboo in the background, layout for Roanoke, Virginia book author

Red Panda Publishers | Logo Design

The book spine is a narrow parcel of real estate to work with, however it really is the most critical part of a published book because it is often the primary thing a person views in the bookstore. Concerning a publishing company, it’s the opportunity they will ever have to spotlight their product and get their logo design in front of the men and women that shop for actual books.

This 3 color design is vibrant, colorful and eye-catching and it leaves plenty of room for the title and the author’s name.

Air LA logo design developed for an airline in Los Angeles, the logo has 2 letter A's with the bars modified to indicate they are wings.

Air LA | Logo Design

Airlines come and depart yet it seems like that in many cases one of the aspects folks tend to remember the most are their logos. The Air LA logo design was done for a small new venture commuter/shuttle air service situated in LA and while I’m not sure it actually “took off” their logo design didn’t ground them. The bookend A’s in their name lent itself well to imparting a sense of flight and it was surely a winner.

Roanoke logo design made use of for advertising as well as a tag layout for Vintage Instance features an old typeface layout.

Vintage Case | Logo Design

Vintage case specialized in all new cases for music instruments, that appeared to be much older cases. For this business logo design I sought to come up with a logo that offered a fluid nostalgic feel to it and could easily be utilized for anything from a website to a label on brand new cases that seemed like they were from a different era.

Logo produced for an orthodontist in Roanoke, Virginia, design include an arc with lines converging through it to suggest metal dental braces.

Kujak Orthodontics | Logo Design | Sign Design

Dental care business logos can be one of the most challenging logo design projects because it appears that every dental professional involves a smile, a tooth, a smiling tooth, or a toothy smile in their design. Dental business logos are one of the most cliche ridden fields when it comes to company advertising, if dining establishments approached their advertising in the very same way dental practices do every one of their logo designs would be a picture explaining something they served, McDonalds would most likely contain a picture of a potato and a cow.

I recognize the thinking behind incorporating an illustration of something mouth related to a dentist’s logo design but it has to be performed subtly or it will just look like every other clipart dentists logo that litter the branding landscape of the dental industry.

I really love doing dentistry logos because it challenges me to come up with a design that implies dentistry or a certain area of the field of dentistry like orthodontics without resorting to the clichéd course of action that so many dentists settle on.

Kujak Orthodontics offered such an opportunity and inevitably I created a layout that does not have a single smile or a tooth in it, but even though they aren’t overt, they are still suggested in the concept. When I turned this particular concept over to the customer the only smile that was evident was the smile on Dr. Kujak’s face.

William McNally logo made for a family members not-for-profit, the logo includes 4 personalities startled in height to represent a family unit with in the design.

William McNally | Logo Design | Branding

The William McNally Family Foundation contacted ImageCo to help them come up with a logo design that would be representative of the love that William McNally had for the people in his community. Many logos with the name “family” in them tend to contain pictures of a happy family, a cliche heavy technique to any logo design is to be very literal with regards to what the name says or the industry it represents. I’ve discovered that the best concepts are the ones that are downplayed and never hit the viewer on the head with what the business or institution wishes to project.

The McNally Foundation’s name provided a distinct opportunity to do a logo which communicated that they were about families without being openly tacky about it. The goal of a logo design is to be remembered and recognized and if the designer attempts to use the logo to explain specifically how people should think or feel they don’t understand the objective of a logo. If you have to ponder a logo design to understand what it means, it has failed, a logo needs to be immediately comprehended and a logo design that illustrates itself will never have the opportunity to be understood.

Logo design created for a hair design studio including a manuscript font a hummingbird as well as an implied orchid for the letter O.

Wild Orchid Studio | Logo Design Project

Wild Orchid Studios wanted a business logo that communicated a sense of ease and connection for their new hair studio. I came up with a concept which did not go the obvious route of crafting simply a stylized orchid but rather created a logo which suggested a flower in the pattern of a swirl incorporated into the letter O in the title and by placing attention on the concept using the silhouette of a hummingbird hovering above the image itself. The obvious path in creating a business logo is generally the wrong route and in this case, the design ended up not being about the orchid but alternately put the main focus on the feeling that they wanted to project to their patrons.

Dazzo Arabians | Logo Design

Logo style for a software application designer the design functions as well as renowned element of a bridge to the left of the name.

Smart Kernels | Logo Design

A kernel is the key part of an operating system (OS). Generally, the kernel is responsible for memory management, process and task control, and disk management. The kernel unites the system hardware to the application software. In other words a kernel is {essentially|quite literally a bridge that acts as a bridge between the software and computer hardware.

The logo I came up with for Smart Kernels was based on an actual bridge that is situated a few miles from the offices of Smart kernels. It’s a logo design that doesn’t attempt to describe anything to anyone about what business they are in or how it relates to their specific location. However, it intimated something to the business owner of the business and in quite a few cases the substance supporting a company logo is equally as important as how it brands the enterprise it stands for.

A logo style including an angler in the center of the name casting a fly in the direction of the viewer.

On The Fly | Logo Design | Retail Branding

With companies such as Cabelas and Bass Pros raking in more than 7 billion a year selling supplies and equipment to outdoor sporting enthusiasts the founders of On the Fly understood the market was prepared for an outdoor sporting retailer that operates as a consignment firm. Whether you are into boating, sportfishing or rock climbing, or even hunting, On the Fly presents a location for outdoor sports enthusiasts with all types of interests, a spot to sell their previously owned equipment to other sports enthusiasts. I tailored their Roanoke logo design dsign along with a graphic which garners the interest of vehicles and sends an image that arouses the passion of the outdoors. With traffic that averages 45 mph I realized it would take more than the average logo/sign to get commuters to take notice, hence the graphic of a fly fisherman in his natural and peaceful habitat.
Logo style MQ ranches, this logo layout has actually a field included right into the letter Q.

MQ Farms | Logo Design | Branding

The MQ farms company logo idea wasn’t really produced for an Roanoke, Virginia regional farm it was really developed for an investments broker, and this logo design was one of multiple that fell under the MQ umbrella … MQ commodities was one, MQ trading was another. The objective was really to create a brand mark that projects esteem, effectiveness, and prosperity.

Roanoke Logo design for a not-for-profit, Turning Point Solutions - the logo design feature for externally dealing with arrowhead and the arrowheads imply that it is a ruby form.

Turning Point Foundation | Logo Design

The Turning Point Foundation was completely open to what kind of logo design that they wanted, this can be a good thing or a bad thing. Good in that it provides a designer the opportunity to delve into any concept that comes to mind, bad in that it’s hard to hit a bullseye in the absence of recognizing where exactly the target is. Fortunately, in this particular instance, I hit a bullseye with the first go.

Logo created for using an indicator for the restaurant (Brewgrrs), it is an elaborate script typeface that is evocative a popular sports group logo.

Brewgrrs Restaurant | Logo Design | Restaurant Branding

I have designed dozens of restaurant logo designs and business signs for restaurants, diners, sports bars, night clubs, dining establishments, and eateries all over the US, from cupcake bakeries to pizza parlors and oyster bars, out of all of them I think Brewgrrs was my favorite. Brewgrrs was a great project in which I worked directly with the owner to design a logo that worked very well and did a fantastic job to brand them, it functioned on everything on everything from coasters, and tap handles all the way to the lighted signage that hung above their doors, and was highly visible and very easy to read from over a block away.
